Avery's signed inscription to 'Anthony, his sculptor friend' to the half-title, dated 1999. Contains colour and monochrome full-page and in-text illustrations throughout.As well as being an expert in European sculpture, Avery is a Cavliere of the Order of Merit of Italy, and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in London.Arthur M. Sackler amassed a great collection of art, and in this particular study, Avery analyses the history and use of terra-cotta in post-Medieval European art. Today, Sackler is a controversial figure due to his role in the Oepiod Crisis, and his collection was removed from the Met in 2021.
