String bound with first page a little creased and brown wraps in worn and slight marked condition, text very good.Encloesd in attractive marble wraps, tied with ribbon at spine and with supplued printed label, these in nice condition Title on cover in typed Russian (Cyrillic) on label. Bought from the estate of Richard Hare ( 1907 - 1966). He was a scholar and expert on Russian literature and art. He wrote several books on Russian literature including 'Pioneers of Russian Social Thought (1951) and 'The Art and Artists of Russia' (1965.) He was married to the Latvian sculptor Dora Gordine. This Katayev (1897 - 1886) play appeared in 1943 and is described in the Oxford Companion to the Theatre as an 'amusing trifle.' His most successful play was Squaring the Circle (1928). The manuscript also has the words 'Mr. Reavey' on the back of one page. This is likely to be the translator and writer (Russian born) George Reavey (1907 - 1976) he published Soviet Literature Today in 1946. It was probably submitted to him for translation but there is no record of a published version. Signedes.
