Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Democracy and Good Governance reminds us of the true meaning of good governance and what democracy entails. Subhash Kashyap details practices and protocols followed in the Indian Parliament and the deviations and aberrant behaviours of legislatures, noting what their actual duties are and ought to be. The author also brings out in a series of biographical sketches his encounters with some remarkable parliamentarians during his long tenure in the Parliament Secretariat. His essays on value-based education, included in his book, encourage the nurturing of democratic values that are syncretic with India's Constitution enshrined tenets of equality, secularism and life of dignity for all its citizens. Recap and Summing Up Sixty years of parliament its changing face and functions (from 1947 to 2007). 22. The road ahead Need for parliamentary reforms renewing parliamentary institutions and procedures. Index. Parliament's pivotal position in India's democratic polity is not only a matter of fundamental principle in constitutional theory but it is also a well established fact in our political life. As a microcosm of the nation parliament has consistently reflected the feelings hopes aspirations and even weaknesses and frustrations of the people of India. It is above all their supreme representative institution notwithstanding all its shortcomings and failures. During the nearly six decades of the operation of the constitution the resilience and relevance of the institution of Parliament has been amply proved. Notwithstanding temporary aberrations decline in the standards of debate and conduct of members in times of crises like foreign aggressions internal disturbances etc. parliament has stood its own and retained its identity and legitimacy. This is an honest attempt to objectively trace and authoritatively narrate the interesting story of the origin and growth of representative parliamentary institutions in India and present a comprehensive history of the parliament of India covering the various stages of its growth in all their ramifications. Such a gigantic undertaking called for sustained and extensive research and digging out collection and collation of a lot of data and information. In a parliamentary polity history of the nation is very largely shaped in the houses of its parliament and to that extent the history of parliament is bound to encompass much of the history of the nation. In as much as this is the only work on the history of our parliament it is hoped that it would fill a void and would be widely welcomed. 1132 pp.

The Volumes of the Project on the History of Science, Philosophy and Culture in Indian Civilization aim at discovering the main aspects of India's heritage and present them in an interrelated way. In spite of their unitary look, these volumes recognize the difference between the areas of material civilization and those of ideational culture. The project is not being executed by a single group of thinkers and writers who are methodologically uniform or ideologically identical in their commitments. The project is marked by what may be called methodological pluralism. In spite of its primarily historical character this project, both in its conceptualization and execution, has been shaped by scholars drawn from different disciplines. It is for the first time that an endeavour of such a unique and comprehensive character has been undertaken to study critically a major world civilization. The subject matter of the present volume in two parts concerns every ordinary citizen inasmuch as it is a foundational right and a duty of everyone to know and understand the polity and constitutional culture under which we are governed. This volume is divided into two parts-Part 5A on Indian Polity, Governance and the constitution and Part 5B on "Federalism, Elections, Government and Rule of Law". Both the parts start with an introduction which presents the overview theme paper. Part 5A starts with section I on the philosophy of the constitution and concept of Indian polity. Section II is on the making of the constitution. Section III deals with the principles of Governance, human rights, directive principles of fundamental duties. Section IV consists of one comprehensive chapter on impact of India's constitution on her foreign policy and constitutional building in other states. Part 5B begins with section I which deals with Federalism and Union-State Relations. It is followed by section II on Law and justice. Parts III and IV are on Government and administration and elections and electoral processes respectively. (jacket).
