It gives a full account of this ancient religion, its origins and development, its struggles against the later imported Buddhism, and its fight for survival in spite of persecution and even abolition on two occasions. The reassembly of the scriptures dispersed at these times is major object of attention. In his introduction the editor makes an assessment of the historical value of the work and considers the extent of its reliability and factual accuracy. He has also, here and in the footnotes to the translation, indicated its sources which are extremely numerous and varied. The transliteration of the Tibetan text is followed by two indices of names and a short glossary of rare terms." ( jacket) No. 21019 365 pp.

Soft cover. Zustand: As New. Contents: Preface. Acknowledgement. 1. The protector deities. 2. Tibetan text. Bibliography. Index. From the preface: The book is an iconographic study of an unusual Tibetan Painting. As a work of art its quality is remarkable, and it is probably the only one of its kind in its frame and subject matter. The existence of other paintings that depict the same deities has not so far been attested. The painting belongs to the Bon religious tradition and is currently preserved in the Rubin Museum of Art (RMA) in New York, where it featured in an exhibition of Bon art that took place in 2007.

Such concrete and detailed description of the Bonpo Monasteries and people, based on extensive field work, has never before appeared since the beginning of Tibetology. The field survey of actual conditions of Bon Culture was conducted in TAR, Tibet Areas in China, India and Nepal. It has been defined in a variety of ways, but regardless of how we define it, we can properly say that its culture has penetrated Tibetan culture from ancient times to the present day. For our deeper understanding of Tibetan culture, Bon is thus indispensable. This volume is a part of the results of the International Symposium entitled New Horizons in Bon Studies held in 1999 at the National Museum of Ethnology, Osaka, Japan. The purpose of this symposium was to discuss the Bon related themes from all aspects, such as anthropology, folklore, Buddhist studies, religious studies, cosmology, philology and linguistics to establish interfaces among various disciplines and to construct a common groundwork for the Bon studies. The edited fruits of the symposium are shown in this book, which are categorized as Bon and its relationship to Buddhism, rDzogs-chen, myths and rituals, social and anthropological approach to the Bonpo monasteries and their lay communities, and above all Bon in a more wider context. The linguistic studies on Zhangzhung and related Himalayan languages will separately appear as the next issue of this series.

From the Preface: Bon is one of the Pre-Buddhist religions in Tibet and it has been defined in a variety of ways. But, regardless of how we define Bon, it could be properly said that, in the Bonpo culture, we perceive something essential or even universal that has permeated Tibetan culture throughout the ages. The 'Organized Bon' boasts a huge scriptural canon equal in size to the Tibetan Buddhist canon. Actually, the Bonpo Kangyur reprinted and published in Chengdu consists of 180 volumes, while the new series of the Katen Texts collection (so-called Tengyur) recently published in Lhasa contains at least 300 volumes (see our Catalogue of the New Collection of the Bonpo Katen Texts, SER 24, 2001). Although each taxonomic level of these huge collection of texts containing a wide variety of entangled contents, this fact itself supports Dr. D. Snellgrove's assertion, Accepting everything, refusing nothing through the centuries, It (=Bon) is the one all-embracing form of Tibetan religion (The Nine ways of Bon, London Oriental series, 18, p. 13, 1967).

Zustand: Sehr gut. Large format softcover binding, 189 pages, 86 colour plates, still in original shrinkwrap, as new condition. With one of the few prefaces one has the impression the Dalai Lama actually authored himself. He expresses his uneasiness with the publication of this book, which was transmitted in Tibet only in manuscript copies. The complete Tibetan text is printed only in this sumptuous hardcover edition. In the paperback edition, which was published a couple of years later, the text was omitted. One of the most beautiful books published on Tibet and Tibetan art with the fantastic illustrations of this singular manuscript showing the dreams and visions of the Great Fifth, executed by his personal calligrapher. It is a detailed narrative catalogue of the visionary experiences of the 5th Dalai Lama Ngawang Lobzang Gyatsho (1617-1682) visionary experiences from the age of 6 until one year before his death at the age of 65. The illustrations represent the finest-known quality in Tibetan book illumination and are executed in gold, silver, greens, blues and reds against a charcoal background. Up to as many as 38 different ritual objects can be depicted in one illustration and have been fully identified in the corresponding captions, with their ritual use explained in a glossary. French edition of this important book, which is becoming rare in any edition. Sprache: Französisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

"An English translation of the autobiography of Ngagwang Lobzang Gyatsho, the Fifth Dalai Lama (1617-1682) . a veritable witness to the life and culture of Tibet in the 17th century, which was a formative period for the establishment of the Tibetan Buddhist theocracy. In addition, the major events in which he himself played a pivotal role are presented: the overthrow of the king of Tsang, the creation of the Tibetan theocratic state with the founding of the Gaden Photrang government, the building of the Potala Palace and the undertaking of major diplomatic relationships with foreign powers, such as the Mongols and the Manchu empire" (dust jacket blurb).
