Celebrating the work of Frank Gehry, this catalog focuses on his most prolific architectural work in Santa Monica and Venice, California. His own house in Santa Monica, for example, demonstrates his penchant for employing simple materials in unique, innovative ways. Chain link fences, aluminum siding, and window panes are set at sharp, striking angles from one another, yet the entire ensemble achieves a surprising sense of harmony. Other Gehry works discussed and illustrated include Loyola Law School, the California Aerospace Museum, the Edgemar Development, the Restaurant ôFishdanceö in Japan, and the Yale Psychiatric Institute in Connecticut, to name a few. , Swedish, Year1990, Illust. Employing the talents of engineers, architects, city planners, and others, the art of bridge building is in essence a collaborative effort. Because the building of bridges inherently deals with conforming to a pre-existing environment, this exhibition highlights the fact that bridges themselves are alike while their locations are markedly different. Drawing from models, drawings, and existing bridges from both past and present, this book provides unparalleled insight into this art form that is truly unique. The innovative work of Santiago Calatrava is juxtaposed to past bridge-building in order to emphasize the startling range of possibilities in this field. , Swedish, Year1992, Illust. B/W80, Illust. In honor of the increasing exchange of ideas between the Baltic countries and Scandinavia, the Arkitekturmuseet in Stockholm collaborated with the new Estonian Architecture Museum for this monumental exhibition. Until this point, Estonian architecture developed on its own terms. Le CorbusierÆs (1887-1965) relationship with Stockholm began with the international competition of 1933 for which he submitted drawings of a city plan for Nedre Norrmalm, a suburb of Stockholm. Later, in the early 1960s, he became involved with plans to design a small art museum in Stockholm which would display works by Matisse, Picasso, and himself. Though neither of these commissions came to fruition, they set the foundation for his interaction with both the Swedish public and its architectural community. This book describes and documents these two projects as well as his relationship with many Swedish architects who studied at his atelier in Paris. , Swedish, Year1987, Illust. B/W73, Illust. An intriguing and exciting book that captures the very essence of its theme: the reinvention of the ôroomö. Focusing on the revolution in room design during the 20th century, this book reveals the influence of Modernism in introducing rooms without a center. Rooms were opened up; corners were broken down and walls moved apart to allow for another principle: an order for Movement. Movement is not anything new in architecture, but ModernismÆs approach is starkly original because movement is generated primarily by the absence of any clear boundaries to rooms, as opposed to being generated by rooms organized into new relationships with one another. Nearly 20 essays by various authors explore the multi-faceted implications of this shift in room design, thus comprising a truly dynamic book that is most informative., Swedish/ English, Year1998, Illust.
