Mikhail Dmitrievich Karateev (Prince Karachevskiy, 1904-1978) fought for the White Russians as a teenager, and left Russia with General Wrangel in 1920. He received some military education in Bulgaria but later trained as a chemical engineer in Belgium. He ultimately settled in Uruguay where he wrote historical novels (early Russia, 13th-15th centuries) and emigre stories. Count (also Professor) V. V. Ulanov was his neighbor in Uruguay, and illustrated a number of his books.
