Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - In this book, Jin Kai provides an alternative perspective on the power interactions between a rising China and a 'relatively' declining U.S. in the changing world situation. Grounded in previous scholarship, Jin argues that China's rise is historically, culturally, and structurally different; a peaceful power transition requires engagement by the U.S. in international institutions. Grounded in case studies and theory, this study will be of relevance to any reader interested in the evolving great power relationship between China and the U.S.

73pp, original cream wrappers and first and last leaves foxed otherwise a good copy. 18.5 x 13 cm. A fascinating wartime booklet providing guidance for Japanese teachers who were teaching elementary Japanese in occupied areas of Southeast Asia. The booklet was published by the South Seas Association (Nany? Ky?kai), a body first established in 1915 to promote the expansion of Japanese influence in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, and later placed under the overall control of the Japanese government. The text gives a sense of the anxiety that the Japanese authorities felt at the massive task of teaching their language to occupied and colonised peoples, while also trying to win their hearts and minds, with the ultimate aim of making Japanese the common language of Greater East Asia. As the booklet explains on its opening page, 'the teacher's work goes beyond mere language instruction. As representatives of the one hundred million people of the Empire, teachers should be thoroughly aware of being leaders in culture as a whole, and from the first there should be no behaviour which besmirches their dignity. They are required to interact with local residents and stand before their class with fervent enthusiasm, sincere diligence and overflowing kindness, and so aim to create wholehearted acceptance of the idea that "the Japanese are strong but kind"'. The lesson plans start with simple advice on teaching greetings and words and expressions such as 'yes', 'no', 'well done', 'lovely', 'teacher', 'student' etc. They then progress to lessons about shopping, foodstuffs (both Japanese and local), parts of the body, plants and animals etc., ending with lessons on 'the army', 'the navy' and 'Greater East Asia' and 'Japan'. All the teaching is done through the medium of phonetic katakana characters. In the latter classes, students are taught phrases emphasising the might of the Japanese military, and introduced to symbols such as cherry blossom and the Japanese flag, and to the famous story of the Peach Boy Momotar?, who travels to the island of ogres and defeats the ogres in battle (presented during wartime as a parable of Japan's triumph over its enemies).
