Full-Leather. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Full-Leather: Very Good, 41,5 x 27,5 cm, [56]-1/487-[1 bl.], 489/1018 [= 1016], 1019/1666 [= 1664]-[16], Latin, 1st Edition, 3 volumes, illustrations, book condition: Very Good (Law Rome) Fifty books of the Digest or Pandects represented from the Florentine Pandects. Florence, L. To…rrentinus, 1553, 3 volumes, folio: [56]-1/487-[1 bl.], 489/1018 [= 1016], 1019/1666 [= 1664]-[16] pp. (some vague moisture stains, a few faint mold spots in the upper white margin of volume III, some tears in the white margins and handwritten notes, handwritten index on f. [56v] in volume I). 18th-century speckled calf binding, spine with gilded decorations, raised bands and labels, speckled edges (covers with scratches and some soiling, corners and edges lightly scuffed, spine renewed). Beautiful copy with wide margins. A splendid edition of all three volumes of the "Pandects" (the codification of Roman law, carried out at the behest of Emperor Justinian and promulgated in the year 533), based on a 6th-century manuscript of the "Corpus iuris civilis" that was then kept in the Medici library at the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. Leading legal scholars from all over Europe eagerly awaited this edition based on this archetypal manuscript. Attention was given to first-rate publishers, such as Estienne in Paris, Froben and Episcopius in Basel, Gryphius in Lyon, or Giolitio in Venice. Ultimately, Duke Cosimo I de' Medici, the owner of the manuscript, decided to have it printed in Florence. He invited Laurentius Torrentinus, a bookseller from Bologna originally from the Low Countries, to take on this challenge. Torrentinus began in 1547 as the ducal printer and published this impressive folio edition in 1553. The edition was the work of Lelio Torelli but was attributed to his son Francesco, who signed the introduction dedicated to the Duke of Florence. This is the most prestigious humanistic edition, created in collaboration with the greatest Spanish humanist, Antonio Agustín. It was printed with beautiful French type in Aldine style, engraved by Robert Granjon and Michel Dubois, and illustrated with numerous beautifully designed woodcut initials, including the stunning image of Justitia, surrounded by the coat of arms of the Medici and the imperial eagle (p. 1), and woodcut motifs on the title page and the last verso. It is undoubtedly the finest edition of the ducal printer. Producing such a substantial work undoubtedly required a significant investment. Torrentinus must be regarded as one of the greatest printers of the Renaissance, who published works by famous authors such as Giovio, Guicciardini, and Vasari. Very rare edition of the Code of Justinian, printed by Yolande Bonhomme (active ca. 1497-1557). It was likely the first time this text was printed by a female printer, as we have not been able to find an earlier edition printed by a woman. This edition by Bonhomme has never been on the market before, is only available in a few l…ibraries and is not mentioned in several of the most important relevant reference works.Bonhomme was the daughter of bookseller and printer Pasquier Bonhomme (active 1451-1501) and the wife of printer Thielman Kerver (active ca. 1497-1522). Women in France were not allowed to start their own printing business, but they could take over their husband's company after his death. When Kerver passed away in 1522, Bonhomme continued the business under her own name and remained in charge for 35 years. She was one of the most successful female printers of her time and is the first woman known to have printed the Bible (1526).This edition by Bonhomme is heavily glossed. Although it is not mentioned, these glosses are very likely by Accursius (ca. 1183-1263), a professor of law at the university of Bologna. With an extensive owner's inscription and a black, oval library stamp on the title-page, and with annotations in the margins of some pages. The edges and corners of the boards are somewhat scuffed, the leather is slightly scratched and soiled, slightly affecting the clarity of the blind-tooling. Two ink stains on the title-page, but the text is still legible, the inner margin of the title-page and the lower margin of the first text leaf are restored, without affecting the text, a small tear in the woodcut initial on leaf 2A1 (prefatio G. Haloandri), without loss of paper, the outer edges of the final 10 leaves are slightly frayed, the lower outer corners on the last 6 leaves are folded, also without affecting the text. Overall in good condition.l WorldCat 312067202, 313412679, 993078134 (4 copies); Not in Adams; Brunet; Graesse; USTC. Contemporary blind-tooled pigskin, sewn on 4 supports with the corresponding raised bands on the spine, the blind-tooling on both boards show a central panel with a floral centre-piece and floral corner-pieces within a geometric frame of triple fillets, surrounded by a frame depicting biblical scenes. With the manuscript title on the spine and the front board. Red and blue sprinkled edges. With the woodcut printer's device of Thielman Kerver on the title-page, one full-page woodcut illustration of the "arbor de interdictis" on fol. CCCCCLXXXIIIr, a near full-page woodcut illustration of emperor Justinian I on fol. CCCCCCCIIIIv, and numerous woodcut initials throughout. The title-page and text are printed in red and black. Pages: [40], CCCCCCCIIII, ll.
