Small nick to head of spine cloth.Private plate of Minnesota Historical Society on fixed endpaper. Joint between upper board and free endpaper split leaving upper board a little loose, text block sound. Vol.II-Shelf wear to edges of boards with bumped corners and a little scuffing to same. Small nicks to cloth at head of spine. Small Boston University label to fixed endpaper. Joint between upper board and free endpaper starting to split but still intacts and text block is sound. Vol.III-Rubbing to fore-edges of boards with corners of rear board bumped. Thrre small punctures to cloth on upper-joint.Remains of bookplate to fixed endpaper. Born of German parents in Moscow, he was influenced in his desire to explore Africa by Schweinfurth who drew his attention to the lands south of the Libyan desert, 'a region at that time. still shrouded in the veil of an awe-inspiring mystery'. His fascination with the region led him to make three expeditions over a period of eleven years and he is recognised as one of the great African explorers.
