Original cloth. Zustand: Sehr gut. LXXXIII, 418, VIII, 611 p., ill. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Slightly stained edge, otherwise very good and clean. / Leicht angeschmutzter Schnitt, sonst sehr gut und sauber. - Franciscus Junius (29 January 1591 1677), also known as François du Jon, was a pioneer of Germanic philology. As a collector of ancient manuscripts, he published the first modern editions of a number of important texts. In addition, he wrote the first comprehensive overview of ancient writings on the visual arts, which became a cornerstone of classical art theories throughout Europe. In 1617, he became a pastor at Hillegersberg, near Rotterdam. He resigned this position the following year, after he refused to take sides in a theological conflict in the Dutch Reformed Church, centering on faith out of free will as advocated by Jacobus Arminius or faith out of predestination, as defended by Junius' uncle Franciscus Gomarus. After his resignation, Junius elected to travel instead: he visited first France, and then moved to England, where in 1620 he was employed by Thomas Howard, earl of Arundel, as a tutor to his son, and later as librarian. It was for Arundel, an avid collector of Greek and Roman art objects, that Junius wrote his De pictura veterum, a theoretical discussion of classical art and one of the cornerstones of the Neoclassical movement. Published in 1637 in Latin, it was followed by his own translations into English (1638) and Dutch (1641); the latter edition was written with a readership of artists in mind. In his later life, Junius devoted himself to the study of the Old Germanic languages. His work, while intrinsically valuable, is particularly important as having aroused interest in a subject that at the time was often neglected. (Wikipedia) Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Jahrhunderts. JUNIUS, Franciscus. ETYMOLOGICUM ANGLICANUM ex Autographo descripsit & accessionibus permultis auctum edidit EDWARDUS LYE. Oxford, Sheldonian Theatre, 1743. Folio. Unpaginated. First edition. Engraved headpiece, and frontispiece author portrait from Van Dyke, engraved by George Vertue. Franciscus Junius (1591-1677) brought up at Leiden, was a pioneer of the study of language. He lived in England from 1620 to 1642 as tutor and librarian to the family of the Earl of Arundel. After his return to Holland he wrote a history of Classical art, which he translated from the Latin into English and Dutch, and books on early Germanic and Dutch languages. He returned to England two years before his death, and left a collection of manuscripts, including his own works, to Oxford. Edward Lye, a young clergyman, edited the ms. for the etymological dictionary in the Bodleian Library, and had it published. It was extremely important as the first systematic etymological dictionary in English, and was Samuel Johnson's primary source in writing his Dictionary. Occasional light marginal spotting, but on the whole internally clean, in old calf, quite worn. Both boards and first four leaves detached.

[572]pp, frontispiece portrait. Folio. A very nice clean & wide-margined copy. Handsomely rebound in half speckled calf, raised bands, red morocco label. Withdrawal stamp of the University Library of Newcastle Upon Tyne. Alston V 354; ESTC T145431. FIRST EDITION. Franciscus Junius, François du Jon, 1589-1677, was a philologist and scholar of the Anglo-Saxon language. Born in Heidelberg, he was resident in England Between 1621 and 1651 as librarian to the Earl of Arundel, and tutor to his son. He returned to live in Oxford before his death in 1677, upon which he left his manuscripts to the Bodleian Library. These included Etymologicum Anglicanum which was edited and printed by Edward Lye (a fellow scholar of ancient English philology) with the addition of an Anglo-Saxon grammar. When published in 1743 it was the first systematic etymology of the English language and was an influential source for Samuel Johnson when writing his Dictionary of the English Language, first published in 1755. Together with Stephen Skinner's Etymologicon Linguæ Anlicanæ (1671), Johnson relied heavily on Junius's work for establishing the derivation of words from 'the Teutonic range', i.e. Saxon, German, and similar dialects. 'For Teutonic etymologies, he [Johnson] relied, as he told [William] Adams, 'on "Junius and Skinner".' (Samuel Johnson: A Biography By John Wain.).

Junius juxtaposes all the passages known to ancient authors concerning painting to reconstruct, without concern for chronology, the history of this art and he develops a pictorial theory which takes into account the psychological (Book I) and pedagogical (Book II) factors of artistic creation, the third book studying the 'parts of painting' in a rhetorical and poetic perspective". (C. Nativel). All the authors of treatises on art in the 17th century, such as Fréart de Chambray, Roger de Piles, Félibien, have studied this second edition and have borrowed from it on numerous occasions. It is the most complete edition, very different of the first, with a second unpublished part, an alphabetical catalogue of the artists - painters, sculptors, architects, engineers - of Greek and Latin Antiquity, with what the ancient texts tell us about their works. The first edition of 1637, also posthumous, was a small quarto of 318 pages. "The modest 1637 volume has become an elegant work." Junius or François Du Jon (Bourges, 1545-Leyden, 1602), philologist and professor of reformed theology, disciple of Calvin and Theodore de Bèze, left a large number of works, all of great erudition. The edition is illustrated with a beautiful allegorical frontispiece and a portrait of the author. The second part, the Catalogus, has its own title page. This edition was prepared by Johann Georg Graevius, based on the manuscript donated by Junius family. Junius had not been able to find a publisher willing to take on such an expensive volume. This he combined in ?De pictura veterum libri tres? with a philological treatise on the classical notions of art, an art history and a defence of the pictorial arts. The book was published with a dedication to Charles I of England, and it became a powerful scholarly book, praised by both Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony Van Dyck. An English translation ?The Painting of the Ancients? was published in 1638, translated by Junius himself. The Swedish historian Jonas Hallenberg (1748-1834) is today mostly know for his large work on Gustavus Adolphus, published in five parts between 1790 and 1796.
