Longtemps demeuré anonyme, cet ouvrage fut attribué à Junius Castelnau par Pierre Jourda (Un Théoricien du romantisme, in Revue d'histoire littéraire de la France, juillet-septembre 1932).« Cet essai est d…'un anonyme qui n'a jamais pu être identifié ; l'avant propos déclare que le livre n'est que la refonte d'un mémoire présenté en 1820 aux Jeux floraux ( L'écrit est d'ailleurs modéré, ce qui confirmerait la date de sa composition, en 1820 ; il traite la question d'un point de vue historique, et se présente ici comme un jalon et un témoignage suggestifs, au moment où le Mercure du XIXe siècle commence à se rallier à l'Ecole » (Escoffier, 562). L'attribuzione dell'«Essai» a Castelnau è stata sostenuta da Pierre Jourda nel 1932; secondo altri, l'autore potrebbe essere lo stesso Maurice Escoffier editore della bibliografia sul «Mouvement romantique».
