Hardcover. Zustand: Sehr gut. 1. Auflage, Limitierte Ausgabe. First edition, one of only 100 copies, signed by the artist. Entirely woodblock printed in two shades of blue, with selected passages hand coloured. The book was inspired by Sekino Jun'ichirō's visit to the Hida region in Gifu Prefecture in the summer of 1949, a journey described by the artist in the foreword and directly reflected in the images. The compositions draw on Izumi Kyōka's novel Koya Hijiri (1900), depicting landscapes and sites in Hida associated with the narrative. Rendered with striking economy and restraint, the images exemplify Sekino's highly personal graphic language, combining dramatic simplification with a keen sensitivity to place. Entirely conceived, carved, and printed by the artist, the volume reflects Sekino's central role in the Sōsaku hanga movement and its emphasis on total artistic authorship. At the same time, the work shows a close affinity with the ideals of the Mingei movement, particularly in its reverence for regional culture, traditional craftsmanship, and the quiet dignity of vernacular landscapes. This synthesis of modern individual expression and local tradition is especially evident in the book's intimate scale and contemplative mood. Octavo (16.0 x 11.1 cm). Text in Japanese. Fukuro-toji binding with original woodblock-printed paper wrappers and matching dust jacket printed in white on brown. A fine copy of this beautiful produced and privately published work. Hardcover. Zustand: Sehr gut. Schutzumschlag. 1. Auflage, Limitierte Ausgabe. Limited edition, copy number 1 of only 88 copies, privately issued. A finely produced artist's book of Kajii Motojirō's celebrated short story Beneath the Cherry Trees. First published in 1931, the text opens with its now iconic declaration: "There are dead bodies buried beneath the cherry trees." In a deliberate inversion of Japan's customary association of cherry blossom season with festivity and renewal, Kajii infuses the familiar landscape with an atmosphere of melancholy and latent menace. Narrated in the first person, the story imagines a subterranean realm in which cherry trees are sustained by the decomposing remains of animals beneath the soil. This macabre vision is set against the oblivious hanami crowds above, delighting in the blossoms without awareness of what lies below. The result is a powerful meditation on beauty, mortality, and collective denial, and one of the most striking short texts of Japanese modern literature. The volume is illustrated with four plates by the distinguished printmaker Sekino Junichiro, two woodblock prints and two copperplate etchings. The opening image looks upward through flowering branches toward a distant horizon, possibly recalling the Izu setting in which Kajii wrote the story. The remaining plates move into darker, more stylised imagery, visualising the hidden world beneath the trees. Produced during the flourishing of Japanese artists' books in the 1960s, the volume exemplifies a moment of close collaboration between printmakers, writers, and private presses, in which literary and visual expression achieved exceptional material refinement. Folio (28.6 x 23.0 cm). Text in Japanese. Four plates, two in woodblock and two copper etching by Sekino Junichiro. Original cream card wrappers with thick card dust jacket titled in black with gilt motif of a lemon in the centre, covered by original protective glassine. Comes in the original chemise in quarter brown embossed calf over brown textured paper, spine and upper board titled in gilt with another gilt lemon on the upper board. All housed in the original light brown paper-covered slipcase with printed title label. Occasionally very faint foxing; small, light staining below the title label. Otherwise a near fine copy of this superb Japanese livre d'artist. Signatur des Illustrators.…
