All five books are well used, a tad worn, corners slightly bumped and worn, a few odd brown spotting marks, but overall considering the books are 175 years old, they are all in nice clean condition. Preface by the author Edward Wedlake Brayley dated April 10th, 1848. Volume One: has 495 pages. Volume Two: has 486 pages. Aus dem opulentesten Werk der Ichthyologie, das jemals gedruckt worden ist. Marcus Elieser Bloch war Sohn eines Rabbiners und wuchs in prekärsten Verhältnissen auf. Zunächst als Hauslehrer eines Hamburger Wundarztes beschäftigt, eignete er sich die Grundkenntnisse der Anatomie an und siedelte bald nach Berlin über, wo er durch die Unterstützung ortsansässiger Verwandter ein Studium der Medizin begann. Sein Augenmerk galt aber in erster Linie der Zoologie, insbesondere dem Studium der Fischfauna der Weltmeere. Seine Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische, die in den ersten 3 Bänden die Fischfauna Deutschlands behandelte, in den weiteren 9 Bänden jene anderer europäischer und exotischer Gegenden, war nicht allein ein wissenschaftliches Meisterwerk, sonder war darüberhinaus geprägt von einer zuvor nicht erblickten künstlerischen Qualität in der Darstellung jener Lebewesen. Bemerkenswert ist dabei, daß Bloch größtenteils auf seine eigene Sammlung ichthyologischer Specimen als Vorlage zurückgriff, und nur selten auf andere Quellen vertraute. Die enormen Produktionskosten für die Illustration dieses Werkes konnte Bloch dadurch bestreiten, daß er die einen Großteil der Tafeln von Geldgebern finanzieren ließ, deren Unterstützung durch einen gestochenen Vermerk auf selbigem der Öffentlichkeit bekannt gegeben wurde. From the most magnificient work on ichthyology ever published. Marcus Elieser Bloch was son of a rabbi grewing up in grinding poverty. Despite lacking knowledge of writing and reading German, his education in Hebraic language provided him a position as tutor to the family of a surgeon in the city of Hamburg. Directing his interests towards anatomy during that period he later moved to Berlin for studying medicine, a chance he could only grab through the assistance of local family. His main focus however lay on zoology, especially the study of fishes to which he devoted a significant period of his life-time. His work "Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische" (=Natural History of fishes), of which the first 3 parts were devoted to the species native to Germany while the others were dealing with other European and a wast amount of exotic species, must not only be regarded as a scientific masterpiece that is still referred to today, but also as a masterpiece of art employing many of the foremost engravers at that time. Remarkable though is, that Bloch for the vast majority of species depicted did not drew from foreign sources but from specimens being part of his private collection (today housed in the Humbold-University of Berlin). As the costs for illustrating his opus magnus were simply tremendous, Bloch also invented (?) a new way of fundraising: Since many of the plates could first be brought into print by the engagement of high-standing persons - those oftenly comming from the Prussian nobility - Bloch immortalized their merits for the progress of natural history in stating their names in the print itself at a prominent place just beyond the species depicted while the caption itself was humbly placed in the print's upper corners. - We can offer a selection of about 80 prints from that work, roaming many of the highlight illustrations such as the White Shark, Several species of Rays, the Toad Fish, several Salmonides and porcupine fishes.
