In the next paragraph he refers to the French architect Julien-David Le Roy, recently deceased: 'je savais le résultat de la tentative faites pour le respectable David le Roi il faut ce consoler avec les bonnes âmes de toute celle que l'on rencontre qui sont seche et aride'. A final paragraph describes his intentions towards 'souscripteurs'. In a postscript he presents his respects to 'Mme Vaudoyer'.

Julien-David Le Roy's Les Ruines des plus beaux Monuments de la Grece, first issued in 1758, was the first book to show the wonders of Greek civilization. Overnight, Greece became the rage, much to the chagrin of Giovanni Battista Piranesi and other defenders of the genius of Rome. An 'odeum was a 'comparatively small, often semicircular roofed theater of ancient Greece and Rome used for musical performances'. This exquisite engraving shows the ruins of the monument to Thrasyllus in Athens. Engraved by Le Bas. Copper engraving. Good wide margins. Edges uncut. Fine condition. Uncoloured. 46 x 30.5 cm.

Fine condition.the engraving shows this ancient Greek temple on the north side of the Acropolis.The temple as seen today was built between 421 and 405 BC. Its architect may have been Mnesicles, and it derived its name from a shrine dedicated to the legendary Greek hero Erichthonius. The sculptor and mason of the structure was Phidias, who was employed by Pericles to build both the Erechtheum and the Parthenon.It is believed to have been a replacement for the Peisistratid temple of Athena Polias destroyed by the Persians in 480 BC.On the south side, there is another large porch with columns, and on the south, the famous "Porch of the Maidens", with six draped female figures (caryatids).The temple itself was dedicated to Athena Polias and Poseidon Erechtheus. Within the foundations lived the sacred snake of the temple, which represented the spirit of Cecrops and whose well-being was thought essential for the safety of the city. Nothing remains of this structure nowadays.Le Roy gave a wrong attribution to the ruins depicted at the engraving as the Augustus temple was a small circular building beside the Parthenon.

Black and white.Fine condition.The engraving shows the gateway known as Arch of Hadrian.The Arch of Hadrian is a monumental gateway resembling in some respects a Roman triumphal arch. It spanned an ancient road from the center of Athens, Greece, to the complex of structures on the eastern side of the city that included the Temple of Olympian Zeus. It has been proposed that the arch was built to celebrate the adventus (arrival) of the Roman Emperor Hadrian and to honor him for his many benefactions to the city, on the occasion of the dedication of the nearby temple complex in 131 or 132 AD.[1] It is not certain who commissioned the arch, although it is probable that the citizens of Athens or another Greek group were responsible for its construction and design. There were two inscriptions on the arch, facing in opposite directions, naming both Theseus and Hadrian as founders of Athens.The engraving illustrates the monuments as it was supposed to be in the middle of the XVIII c and was inlcuded in Le Roy´s influential work on Greece that was a major source of inspiration aesthetically. Engraved view, 56x 41 cms,Black and white.The engraving shows this Choragic monument with some people in the foreground.The Choragic Monument of Lysicrates near the Acropolis of Athens was erected by the choregos Lysicrates, a wealthy patron of musical performances in the Theater of Dionysus to commemorate the award of first prize in 335/334 BCE, to one of the performances he had sponsored. The choregos was the sponsor who paid for and supervised the training of the dramatic dance-chorus.In 1658, a French Capuchin monastery was founded by the site; in 1669 the monastery succeeded in purchasing the monument, then being called the "Lantern of Demosthenes" after the famous Athenian statesman of the 4th c. BCE.[2] A reading of its inscription by Jacob Spon established its original purpose.[3] The young British architects James "Athenian" Stuart and Nicholas Revett published the first measured drawings of the monument in their Antiquities of Athens, London 1762. Le Roy´s view shows the lantern attached to the french monastery. The "Ruines" by Le Roy was an important source of inspiration and influenced the neoclassical taste in Europe during XVIII c. A little rubbing to corners and head and tail of spine, leather a bit faded, chafed, and freckled in places, but the binding entirely sound and still quite pleasing; very faint diagonal crease at lower corner of many leaves, a handful of plates slightly browned (one more noticeably so), other minor issues, but quite a fine copy internally--the vast majority of the contents clean and bright, with deep impressions of the text, with the engravings richly impressed, and with vast margins. With engravings by the some of the most esteemed artists of the day, this imposing work contains beautiful depictions of Greek ruins and monuments that proved extremely influential to the development of French Neoclassical architecture. The text is divided into two parts, the first covering the history of various monuments and Le Roy's thoughts on the principles of architecture, and the second primarily containing a discussion of the orders of columns--particularly the Doric order--as well as several reconstructions of ruined temples. According to Millard, this work "breaks new ground in providing a synthesis of archaeological findings with a body of architectural theory developed and expanded from the important controversy of Claude Perrault and Francois Blondel [i.e., quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns]. . . . Perhaps most important, Le Roy's treatise provides the theoretical framework and many of the actual models for French neoclassical architecture." Although "Les Ruines" came under some criticism, especially by British rivals James Stuart and Nicholas Revett, it nevertheless "made a strong public impact," in the words of the Dictionary of Art Historians, and "greatly influenced the architects of the day, particularly Jacques-Denis Antoine, Jean-Arnaud Raymond, Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart, and François-Joseph Bélanger." This was in no small part due to the exquisite plates that included many picturesque views, engraved by talented artists such as Louis-Joseph Le Lorrain, Pierre-Charles Le Mettay, Claude-Antoine Littret de Montigny, and Jacques Philippe Le Bas, among others. The son of the horologer to Louis XV, Julien-David Le Roy (1724-1803) was an architect, art historian, and archaeologist. He was a protégé of Jacques-François Blondel (1705-74), whom he later succeeded as professor at the Académie Royale d'Architecture. After winning the Prix de Rome in 1754, Le Roy spent time in Greece studying and measuring ancient architecture, and developing many of the theories that he would eventually publish in the present work.
