Orig. turquoise cloth, front board decorated in black, spine decorated & lettered in gilt; extremities sl. rubbed, otherwise v.g. Stamp of S. Horsey & Son, Portsea, on leading f.e.p. Composed largely from the diary taken by Arnold on his journey, a volume that was lost following the near-fatal wreck of their ship Bedowin and later rediscovered washed ashore.

First Edition. Arnold gives his impressions of Siût, Girgeh, Assouan, Aboo Simbel, Dakkeh, Mahattah, Karnak, Luxor, Thebes, Denderah, tombs, temples, and other antiquities, native life and customs, scenery, and also provides an account of the shipwreck of their first boat early on in the trip. 4to, 2 pp. Twenty-seven lines. Text clear and complete. Fair, on lightly-aged and slightly creased paper. He cannot help Raffin find an American publisher for his book 'Mystery, Mirage and Miracle' (privately printed for the author in London in 1921), although he finds its style 'delightful', and its subject matter 'one which deeply interests me'. 'The book-market is in a very strained condition - a sort of transition period with all the publishers "sitting on the fence", and the public refusing to by any books except a few which have the luck to become fashionable'. Arnold's latest book, 'The School of Sympathy', has lost him 'several hundred dollars', 'although the newspaper notices were numerous and most kind. It is the way of nearly all books at present'.

Hardback, 9 x 6 inches. Blue cloth with gilt lettering and gilt palm tree design to spine, black panelled front board with crescent design. Pale yellow endpapers. In very good condition. Some minor fading and handling marks to cloth, bumps to corners and a couple of bumps to edges of boards. Prize label to front endpaper ?Arbroath High School, 1884.? Some mild foxing to frontis plate and illustrated title page. One or two minor handling marks else pages clean and tight.
