Dans ce curieux roman, Théodore Muret (1808-186…6) choisit de mettre en scène le seul fils de Rousseau ayant pu échapper aux affres de l'orphelinat. Adopté par un riche seigneur, il connaitra dans un premier temps le luxe et les privilèges avant de se voir, victime de son orgueil, sombrer dans la pauvreté et la misère humaine et psychologique. L'auteur évoque ouvertement le scandale qui éclaboussa l'auteur de l'Émile lorsqu'il avoua avoir placé ses cinq enfants à l'orphelinat. L'ouvrage est précédé d'une intéressante Préface dans laquelle Muret dénigre le rôle de la Préface : « Le meilleur plaidoyer en faveur de l'ouvrage sera l'ouvrage lui-même. […] Le public s'apercevra si vous l'avez ému, instruit, amusé […] que votre livre soit mauvais, au contraire, et toutes les préfaces du monde ne l'empêcheront pas d'ennuyer ». L'édition est illustrée de 2 frontispices gravés sur acier par Fauchery d'après des compositions de Jules David. Exemplaire en reliure de l'époque. Rousseurs et mouillures, tâches à certains feuillets du premier volume, déchirure en marge de la page 245 du second volume. Dernier feuillets du tome II collé à la garde. Frottements à la reliure.
