Archives du Château de La Brède, Charles Lefebvre, Bordeaux, 1877-1878, XV-335, 478 pp. Rare et bon exemplaire bien complet du grand tableau généalogique dépliant (très petits frottements en dos du tome 2, bel exemplaire par ailleurs) de cet ouvrage tiré à petit nombre, sur beau papier vergé. Le texte original de cette Chronique se trouvait dans un manuscrit du Château de la Brède intitulé "Suite ou Continuation de la Chronique Bordeloise de Pierre [ Gabriel ] de Lurbe, par Jehan de Gaufreteau, cy-devant conseiller au Parlement de Bourdeaux et commissaire aux requestes du Palais". Comme l'expose Jules Delpit, "il est superflu d'insister sur l'importance et le mérite historiques de la Chronique que nous imprimons. Notre publication se recommande assez d'elle-même par le piquant et la diversité des anecdotes qu'elle renferme, et par l'utilité des faits qu'elle révèle ou qu'elle éclaire. Non seulement ce recueil continue, complète ou rectifie les chroniques de G. de Lurbe et de J. Darnal ; mais on peut dire qu'il est pour notre histoire locale quelque chose comme serait pour l'histoire de France une fusion des oeuvres de l'abbé de Brantôme, de Pierre de Lestoile et de Tallemant des Réaux." Ces comparaisons sont très exactes, et l'on prend à lire Gaufreteau le même plaisir qu'à savourer les anecdotes d'un Pierre de Lestoile. Pour exemple, en voici une terrible autant qu'édifiante, racontée par Gaufreteau, : "En cette année [ 1567 ], un jeune homme, fils de la ville de Bourdeaux et de condition assez considérable (son pere avoit esté marchant, sa mere estoit vesve), ayant esté condamné d'estre pendu et etranglé, par le Parlement ; car les crimes dont il estoit attaint et convaincu estoyent si sales, qu'il ne meritoit pas de jouir du privilège des enfants de Bourdeaux criminels ; est à noter que, comme il est au bas de l'eschelle pour monter à la potence, il demende de parler à sa mère et tesmoigner d'avoir une grande affection de la voir avant qu'il meure ; on la va quérir, mais, comme ycelle se fut présentée toute esplorée, croyant que son fils lui voulut desclairer quelque grand secret et d'importance, le criminel faisant semblant de la baiser luy arrache le nez avec les dents et luy dict : "Malheureuse mère, si vous m'eussiez plustost chastié que mignardé, ainsin que vous avez faict avec excès en mon enfance, je ne serois pas ici". Et de-là, adressant la parole aux femmes qui avoyent des enfants, leur fit sur ce sujet une sérieuse remonstrance. Ce qui fut la cause que les femmes de Bourdeaux donnerent bien des coups de fouet à leurs petits afin qu'il s'en souvinssent, et ne furent si indulgentes qu'elles avoyent esté envers leurs enfants ; mais de plus, toutes fois et quantes que ladite pauvre mere mutilée passoit par les rues, elles disoyent à leurs enfants : "Reguarde, reguarde cette mere qui a perdu le nez pour avoir trop mignarde son fils, et a esté cause qu'il a esté pendu ignominieusement". Et pour l'année 1580, cette anecdote galante :"En cette année, vivoit un certain médecin, escossois de nation, nommé Mac-Hedor, qui estoit reputé e tenu pour un grand magicien ; mais, parce qu'il avoit une fort e belle jeune femme, qu'il avoit espousée estant vieux, les jeunes gens prirent ce prétexte de son sçavoir e magie pour avoir l'entrée en sa maison, afin de caresser sa femme, qui ne demendoit pas mieux. Elle estoit issue, du costé gauche, d'une des meilleurs maisons de Bourdeaux". Ces extraits mettent en valeur la langue de Gaufreteau. Jules Delpit l'explique : "les locutions et les termes purement gascons qu'on y rencontre contribuent à lui donner une certaine valeur philologique ; car tous ces idiotismes et ces incorrections constatent ce qu'était à cette époque, dans la capitale de l'une des plus importantes provinces du royaume, la langue nationale parlée par un lettré, un magistrat d'un rang éminent, un gentilhomme dont l'éducation avait été formée par des voyages à l'étranger, et même par plusieurs séjours à la cour de France" (Cf.
