Zustand: Wie Neu. Zustandsbeschreibung: Mängelexemplar. Edited by Joy Charnley and Malcolm Pender. The six contributions to this volume trace the effects of war on Switzerland over the last 150 years from a historical, sociological and literary perspective and show the impact of war on a non-combatant nation. Switzerland and War addresses the paradox that Switzerland, a country neutral for over four centuries, has an equally long tradition of bearing arms. The communal decision after the defeat at Marignano in 1515, to avoid hostilities against external powers, was confirmed at the Congress of Vienna in 1815 and Switzerland managed to remain neutral, but over the same period there has been armed conflict within Switzerland the last example as late as 1847. Although Switzerland was spared physical destruction in the twentieth century, the country was inevitably marked by the measures necessary during war-time and by the changes wrought as peace was established. 128 Seiten, broschiert (Occasional Papers in Swiss Studies; vol. 2/Peter Lang Verlag 1999). In den WarenkorbZustand: Wie Neu. Zustandsbeschreibung: Mängelexemplar/near mint. Edited by Joy Charnley and Malcolm Pender. The essays discuss differing notions of Utopia from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries in relation to Switzerland and the often chastening confrontation of these notions with reality. Following on the constitutional reform put in place in 2000, this volume aims to set in context the debate about the kind of society Switzerland wishes to become - isolationist or open to Europe, narrowly traditional or widely multicultural. 113 Seiten, broschiert (Occasional Papers in Swiss Studies; Vol. 3/Peter Lang Verlag 2000). Zustand: Sehr Gut. Zustandsbeschreibung: Mängelexemplar/near mint. Women in Switzerland 1971-1996. Edited by Joy Charnley, Malcolm Pender and Andrew Wilkin. It was not until 1971 that Swiss women acquired the right to vote at federal level. Since then, they have been assuming their rightful role in Swiss public life. Women who exemplify this evolution discuss its various aspects in 25 Years of Emancipation?: two historians examine the struggle for women's suffrage; two sociologists describe the role now played by Swiss women in public life; two leading politicians draw on their experience to assess past difficulties, present achievements and future challenges; several literary specialists assess writing by women since 1971; three Swiss writers and one Scottish writer discuss writing in a minority culture and read from their works and a film director identifies the problems faced by women filmmakers. Drawing on the collective expertise of this range of disciplines, this volume provides a valuable analysis of a period of significant change in Switzerland. 201 Seiten mit Abb., broschiert (Peter Lang Verlag 1998). Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - From 2002 to 2004 Présence Suisse funded a 'Swiss Fellow in the UK' programme in five universities in the four regions of the United Kingdom which enabled a Swiss writer or academic to be based in one university and to undertake short visits to the other four. Three Swiss Fellows, each writing in one of the official languages of Switzerland, took part. This book marks the success of the programme and the events which it generated by assembling contributions from participants and organisers and from others involved in Swiss studies in the United Kingdom. The essays deal with aspects of perception and mediation which occur in the interchange between two countries. There are views of each country acquired by citizens of the other through travel or short sojourns; comments on the effect on their writing from writers who have adopted the other country by living there permanently; and accounts of interchange through critical appreciation, translation and cultural borrowing.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - In 2002, Expo. 02 - the Swiss National Exhibition - celebrated the modern identity of the Swiss Confederation and the electorate approved a historic change in relations with other countries by voting to join the United Nations. Yet, despite bilateral agreements regulating areas of common interest between Switzerland and the European Union, there are still strong fears that Swiss identity could be jeopardised by full membership, and that, within a wider framework, her quadrilingual composition could not be sustained. The experience which the Swiss have accumulated in dealing pragmatically and largely peacefully with different languages is detailed in the six essays of this volume. The special contemporary characteristics of German, French and Italian within Switzerland, the pressures on Romansh, the role played by Switzerland in integrating gender-neutral language into standard usage and the dominance of English as a means of communication between different language groups are amongst the topics discussed.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This volume brings together two very popular and active research fields: Swiss Studies and Intercultural Studies. It includes contributions on the movement of ideas, literatures, and individuals from one culture to another or one language to another, and the ways in which they have been either assimilated or questioned. All of the writers explore this general theme; some come from a literary angle, some look at linguistic inventiveness and translation, whilst others study the problems faced when crossing geographical and cultural borders or presenting ideas which do not 'travel' well. By emphasising the connections, borrowings and mutual influences between Switzerland and other countries such as Germany, Hungary, France, the UK, and the Americas, the articles reaffirm the importance for Switzerland of intellectual openness and cultural exchange.
