One of the early Italian editions of a historical work by Paolo Giovio (1483-1552), translated from Latin by Lodovico Domenichi (1515-1564), renowned for his editions and translations of classical authors. This work is composed of brief biographies of illustrious military leaders, both ancient and modern (i.e., from the Middle Ages to Renaissance). Large edition of the collected works of the Italian humanist and historian Paolo Giovio (1483-1552) from Como. To his extensive contemporary history (Historiarum sui temporis libri XLV) are added several shorter texts about England, Scotland, Ireland, Russia (Moscovia), his native Lake Como and the famous treatise on fish "De Romanis piscibus" (first published in 1524, cf. Wood 359: "a very early treatise on Roman ichthyology"). There are also texts added by the English cartographer and historian George Lily (Virorum aliquot in Britannia. Elogia etc.). - Altough the first title says that the works are "imaginibus illustrata" the edition has no illustrations in the text apart from the portait of Giovio - this copy though has several added engravings. It is also annotated in many parts and has two manuscript pages with further historical details bound in. The endpapers give indices and some notes. Title with a small old owner s inscription. Some browning, little foxing but mostly clean, binding rubbed, rear board with some loss to the covering pigskin. Still a nice and decorative blindstamped binding with a figurative stamp to the center (Christ rising from the dead). ".

Der Doppelband enthält die 2 Teile der historischen Schriften des Jovius "Historiarum sui temporis". Schuber minimal berieben; Einband am Kopf etwas fleckig und mit 3 kleinen hinterlegten Fehlstellen; erste 3 Bl. gering fleckig; teils mit zeitgenössischen Anstreichungen und Glossen; kleines typografisches Exlibris aus dem 1. Drittel des 20. Jhdts auf vorderem Spiegel; hs. Besitzvermerk auf Titelei, datiert 1629. Sauberes und gutes Exemplar. P. Jovius (1483, Como - 1552, Mailand), Philosoph, Mediziner, Historiker, Canonicus und Bischof; vorliegende historische Arbeit "dans son temps, a eu du succès" (Brunet III, 583) und erfuhr verschiedene Editionen. Jovius war schon zu Lebzeiten nicht unumstritten: "Man beschuldiget ihn, er sey sehr parteyisch gewest, und habe gelobt und gescholten, nachdem er Geld gekriegt." (Jöcher II, 1982f) Provenienz: aus der Bonner Bibliothek (1808 in der Franzosenzeit aufgelöst und in Hamburg versteigert) von Clemens August (1723-1761), Kurfürst und Erzbischof von Köln, mit dessen gestochenem Exlibris (von Barthold Heinrich Brockes) auf vorderem Spiegel, darüber auch eine hs. Signatur in Tinte. Der Stecher B. H. Brockes war der Sohn des Hamburger Dichters gleichen Namens (1680-1747); Thieme/Becker (5, 39) mit Erwähnung des Clemens-Exlibris (zuerst 1760). LA.

Etwas spätere Pergamentbände (wohl Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts) mit Rückentitel. Sprache: Latein, Mit einigen figürlichen Holzschnittinitialen. Einbände etwas berieben; Vorsätze leicht stockfleckig; wenige Bll. in Band 1 im weißen Rand etwas wasserfleckig - ansonsten ein nahezu fleckenfreies Exemplar; vereinzelt Tintenanstreichungen und Marginalien von alter Hand; letztes Blatt von Band 1 mit Knickfalte; jeweils alter Besitzvermerk "Ad usum P. Possidii Zitter", 2 Stempel (Augustiner-Konvent Münnerstadt) und kleine Bibliothekssignatur auf dem Titel. Druck in Kursiv und Antiqua - schöner Basler Druck in einem sehr guten Exemplar. Contemporary full vellum binding, small damage to the top of the spine, neatly restored so there is only a small hole at the top. Small wormhole to the first leaves, not affecting text. A bit of foxing at the margins, but printed on good, bright paper; foxing to the second titlepage though. Old name and stamp scratched out on the titleleaf (but not on the second, where it can be clearly read). Some bumps to the upper edge, causing closed tears to some leaves - a few rather long, but only one page with a small loss of text. One page with a stain. Nice woodcut initials at the start of each chapter. Overall: Very good, tight good-looking copy. * Paolo Giovio the Younger [d. 1585] was bishop of Nocera de Pagani in Umbria.
