Klappentext/Texte du rabat: Paru pour la première fois en 1894, soit neuf ans après le décès de son auteur, ce Dictionnaire d'argot fut rédigé par Jules Vallès au cours de son exil londonien (1871-1880). Condamné à mort par contumace en 1872, il dut recourir à divers noms d'emprunt…pour poursuivre ses activités littéraires. Entre 1877 et 1879, il signait couramment ses écrits " Jean La Rue ", pseudonyme qu'il avait adopté en référence au journal - La Rue - qu'il avait animé en 1867 et en 1870. Dans ce dictionnaire qui semble résumer l'histoire du peuple souffrant et du banditisme ordinaire, on trouve quinze mots pour désigner la mort, quatre-vingts pour évoquer la prostitution. " Assassiner " se dit de quatorze façons, " voler " possède un nombre de synonymes plus considérable encore. L'argent, but de toutes les actions, se dit de soixante manières différentes. Pas un seul mot, en revanche, pour désigner l'honneur et la vertu. Injustement méconnu, cet ouvrage témoigne de la part de JulesVallès tout à la fois d'une vive affection et d'une fine connaissance de la langue populaire. The artist's first book, with lithography by Rapier Press, London. Compelling diary-like, soul-searching autobiographical content documenting the experiences…of the photographer as a gay man travelling solo through Katmandu, Nepal - some psychological sidelights - immersed in the culture of the Tharu people (indigenous to the Terai region in the south of the country, and parts of India). Interspersed with the artist's black and white portrait photos of figures met along the journey. Extremely rare artist's book, with OCLC locating only two copies: London's V&A, and the London Metropolitan University. The rear board is very slightly dampstained at upper corner, and endpapers show slight signed of sellotape abrasion where glassine jacket was originally taped down. Glassine is now protected in a removable transparent archival sleeve. Otherwise very good condition.
