Er zählt zu den Gründungsfiguren des Menschenrechtsdenkens und des demokratischen Konstitutionalismus. Bisher wurde er jedoch vor allem auf seine Schriften aus der Frühphase der Französischen Revolution reduziert. Nicht selten wurde er auf dieser Grundlage als Vertreter eines einseitig-rationalistischen Politikverständnisses porträtiert, dessen Technizismus mitunter sogar für die terroristische Entgleisung der Französischen Revolution (mit-)verantwortlich gemacht wird. Eine solche verfehlte Sieyès-Rezeption lässt sich nur revidieren, wenn neben den bekannten frühen Schriften auch die des 'späten' Sieyès zur Verfügung stehen. Mit der Übersetzung und Herausgabe der wichtigsten Schriften von Sieyès aus dem Zeitraum 1775-1795 wird erstmalig eine umfassende deutschsprachige Studienausgabe vorgelegt, ergänzt durch eine Einleitung sowie kritische Kommentierung der Texte, die einen Interpretationsrahmen für sein Werk schafft, wie er bislang weder in Deutschland noch in Frankreich existiert.
