[minor shelfwear, tiny stain at bottom corner of front endpaper; the jacket is somewhat unevenly faded, with some light spotting/dampstaining along the bottom edge of the front panel, a very tiny chip at the upper front hinge, and a long vertical crease in the rear flap]. (B&W photographs) Musical play about Jewish life under Czarist rule, based on the stories of Sholom Aleichem. Filmed (or, one might say, inflated to the big screen) in 1971 by Norman Jewison -- without Zero Mostel, who had originated the role of Tevye on Broadway, but with Israeli actor Topol (who had headlined the West End production of the show in 1967) stepping in and ultimately making the character his own.

In den WarenkorbOriginal playbill of this classic play. Octavo, original illustrated wrappers as issued. Presentation copy, inscribed by the lyricist Sheldon Harnick on the front panel, "For Peter: Sheldon Harnick 12/16/15." In near fine condition. Fiddler on the Roof is a musical with music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and book by Joseph Stein, set in the Pale of Settlement of Imperial Russia in 1905. It is based on Tevye and his Daughters (or Tevye the Dairyman) and other tales by Sholem Aleichem. The story centers on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his Jewish religious and cultural traditions as outside influences encroach upon the family's lives. He must cope both with the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters, who wish to marry for love â" each one's choice of a husband moves further away from the customs of their Jewish faith and heritage â" and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their village. The original Broadway production of the show, which opened in 1964, had the first musical theatre run in history to surpass 3,000 performances. Fiddler held the record for the longest-running Broadway musical for almost 10 years until Grease surpassed its run. It remains the seventeenth longest-running show in Broadway history. The production was extraordinarily profitable and highly acclaimed. It won nine Tony Awards, including best musical, score, book, direction and choreography. It spawned five Broadway revivals and a highly successful 1971 film adaptation and has enjoyed enduring international popularity. It has also been a popular choice for school and community productions.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first printing, inscribed by the writer, composer, and lyricist on the title page: "To Clive Hirschhorn, All my best - Joseph Stein", "To Clive Hirschhorn - And all my best as well! Jerry Bock", and "To Clive Hirschorn [sic] - I'm the last to sign but my sentiments are the same as those below! Sheldon Harnick 10/26/94". This remarkable copy is also signed by the legendary Broadway choreographer, director, and producer Jerome Robbins, just over three months before his death, on the reverse of the front free endpaper: "Add me in too - Jerome Robbins 4/20/98". Robbins both directed and choreographed the first production of Fiddler on the Roof. Accordingly, Robbins won two Tony awards for his contribution to the production. Following their Broadway success with She Loves Me in 1963, Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick turned to the work of Sholem Aleichem for the source of their new work. Fiddler on the Roof had a try-out in Detroit during July and August 1964 and then in Washington during August and September. It opened on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre and transferred to the Majestic Theatre in 1967, before a final move to the Broadway Theatre in 1970. It won nine Tony awards, including best musical, score, book, direction, and choreography. Fiddler on the Roof was the first show to surpass 3,000 performances and held the record for almost 10 years. The musical is recognized for the issues it addresses pertaining to ethnic oppression and Jewish identity. There was a successful film adaptation released in 1971. This item is from the theatre collection of Clive Hirschhorn (b. 1940), who spent decades as the film and theatre critic for the Sunday Express. His various histories of Hollywood include The Warner Bros. Story (1978) and The Hollywood Musical (1981). His ownership note is on the front pastedown, dated 1965. Octavo. Eight pages of black and white photographs. Original black cloth, spine and front cover lettered in red. With dust jacket. Housed in a custom red cloth box. Some minor marks to binding, browning to endpapers, unclipped jacket worn at extremities, spine sunned: a very good copy in like jacket.
