First edition, first printing, inscribed by the writer, composer, and lyricist on the title page: "To Clive Hirschhorn, All my best - Joseph Stein", "To Clive Hirschhorn - And all my best as well! Jerry Bock", and "To Clive Hirschorn [sic] - I'm the last to sign but my sentiments are the same as those below! Sheldon Harnick 10/26/94". This remarkable copy is also signed by the legendary Broadway choreographer, director, and producer Jerome Robbins, just over three months before his death, on the reverse of the front free endpaper: "Add me in too - Jerome Robbins 4/20/98". Robbins both directed and choreographed the first production of Fiddler on the Roof. Accordingly, Robbins won two Tony awards for his contribution to the production. Following their Broadway success with She Loves Me in 1963, Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick turned to the work of Sholem Aleichem for the source of their new work. Fiddler on the Roof had a try-out in Detroit during July and August 1964 and then in Washington during August and September. It opened on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre and transferred to the Majestic Theatre in 1967, before a final move to the Broadway Theatre in 1970. It won nine Tony awards, including best musical, score, book, direction, and choreography. Fiddler on the Roof was the first show to surpass 3,000 performances and held the record for almost 10 years. The musical is recognized for the issues it addresses pertaining to ethnic oppression and Jewish identity. There was a successful film adaptation released in 1971. This item is from the theatre collection of Clive Hirschhorn (b. 1940), who spent decades as the film and theatre critic for the Sunday Express. His various histories of Hollywood include The Warner Bros. Story (1978) and The Hollywood Musical (1981). His ownership note is on the front pastedown, dated 1965. Octavo. Eight pages of black and white photographs. Original black cloth, spine and front cover lettered in red. With dust jacket. Housed in a custom red cloth box. Some minor marks to binding, browning to endpapers, unclipped jacket worn at extremities, spine sunned: a very good copy in like jacket.
