A rare poem by a devout Swedenborgian, Joseph Proud (1745-1826) of Norwich, who had been in the Baptist ministry until he suddenly became a Swedenborgian in the late 1780s. He became one of the New Jerusalem Church's most steadfast and effective preachers and his Hymns and spiritual songs (1790) was the church's first hymn book. Like this poem, it was also published by Robert Hindmarsh, who was a printer by trade but also a committed Swedenborgian. Very rare: this is the only edition, and ESTC locates just two copies - BL and Evanston IL.…
