In 1813 he founded an impressive pathological museum in Strasbourg, a collection that remained intact until after the Franco-Prussian War, when the artifacts were lost. This English tradition of his work was translated from the original Latin, with notes, by Joseph Pancoast, an American surgeon.…

Hardcover. First Edition. Folio, [6], 380, 4 pages plus eighty plates. In Very Good minus condition. Rebound in full light brown calf with gilt titling and gilt fillets to spine. Spine is very faintly creased; has darkened toning to leather around titling and lowermost fillets, shelfwear to tailcap, light rubbing throughout, and light fading to gilding. Boards have light shelfwear to bottom edges, and light scuffing and rubbing throughout; front board has an impact mark to top edge with small areas of cracking leather adjacent. Text block has scattered dot stains, light scuffing, and age-toning to edges; leather strips reinforcing hinges, a large vertical crease to front free endpaper, penciling to front flyleaf and "List of Plates" section, Plate 6.2 (referenced on pages 30-31) set as frontispiece, contemporary owner's name in ink to page 3 with splitting to gutter of that page, tide mark to top corners of pages from Plate 7 (between pages 40-41) to page 113, small hole in lower margin of pages 115-116, heavy foxing to gutter of page 116 and adjacent Plate 26, tide mark to rear of Plate 53, light tide marks to fore edges of pages 103 onwards (increasing in size towards rear of book and spreading to upper fore corners in particular near the end,) splitting to gutter between last two pages and a small chip to their corners, and foxing and light scuffing to pages throughout. Shelved in Room A Oversized. CONTENTS: Six pages of advertisements preceding the title page with another four after the main text. The plates are mostly in black-and-white, but a few have their depicted blood vessels colored or portions of the plate tinted. Prominent 19th century American surgeon Joseph Pancoast (1805-1882) published this landmark surgical text in 1844, including eighty lithographed plates illustrating the pinnacle of surgical techniques at the very end of the pre-anesthetic era. 1415743.
