Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Edinburgh, James Robertson, [1794]. Octavo, 256 pages plus a frontispiece portrait by John Kay. Later (not recent) half polished speckled calf and early marbled papered boards, with a contrasting leather title-label on the spine; tidy conservation to the papered sides; endpapers disc…oloured by the leather turn-ins, with some visible restoration; frontispiece and title leaf a little offset and foxed, with occasional light foxing elsewhere; overall, in very good condition. Joseph Gerrald (1763-1796), political reformer, was one of the 'Scottish Martyrs' transported to Australia for sedition. At the British Convention of the Delegates of the People, a convention of political reformers calling for universal suffrage and annual parliaments, held in Edinburgh in late 1793, Gerrald's 'impassioned and indeed revolutionary eloquence made him one of the outstanding figures of that assembly which modelled its procedures and modes of address on that of the French revolutionaries. This and the increasing public clamour greatly alarmed the Tory government and on 5 December 1793 he . [was] arrested for sedition. Brought to trial at Edinburgh on 3 March 1794 before a prejudiced bench and jury, he conducted himself with great dignity, and although the reasoned eloquence of his defence drew admiration from all present he was convicted and sentenced to fourteen years transportation. The severe and perhaps illegal sentences passed on Gerrald and his fellow reformers caused widespread indignation from those advocating reasonable change in public affairs and formed the subject of debate in parliament. Despite this outcry, and although in failing health, Gerrald was kept for over twelve months in Newgate gaol. On 2 May 1795, without warning or being able to make any preparation for the voyage, he was taken from his sick bed' and transported to New South Wales. When he arrived at Sydney on 5 November 1795, he was far advanced with tuberculosis, and he died on 16 March 1796 ('Australian Dictionary of Biography'). Ferguson 179.

First edition of the transcript of the sedition trial of Joseph Gerrald, who advocated parliamentary reform. Gerrald was transported to Australia for fourteen years and is commemorated as one of the "Scottish Martyrs". Gerrald was a delegate from the London Corresponding Society to the 'British Convention of the Delegates of the… People' assembled at Edinburgh, which sought universal suffrage and annual parliaments. It "generally adopted the language of the French revolutionists. Gerrald was received at Edinburgh with enthusiasm; he was an eloquent speaker, his morning levée at the Black Bull inn was crowded with admiring worshippers, and every night he was attended by a numerous train when he visited and harangued the different 'sections'" (DNB). Arrested in December 1793, he was bailed until his trial in March 1794, where he mounted a forceful defence. "The prosecutions of Gerrald and his fellow agitators excited great indignation, and formed the subject of several debates in parliament. Gerrald remained in prison in London for upwards of twelve months, having for companion his young daughter; during this time he was visited by many friends. In May 1795 he was suddenly shipped to Botany Bay" (DNB). He died five months after. ESTC T51692. Octavo (205 x 127 mm), pp. 256. Portrait frontispiece. Recent quarter calf to style, spine lettered in gilt, marbled sides. Slight spotting at beginning and end, else a fresh copy.

Moderate toning to interior, occasional light foxing. A very good copy in a well-preserved, unsophisticated binding. $1,500. * Third and first American editions, respectively. Scotsmen Thomas Muir, an advocate, and Joseph Gerrald, a political activist, were ardent supporters of the American and French Revolutions and a proponent of comprehensive parliamentary reform in Great Britain. Both men were involved with the London Corresponding Society, which was targeted alongside other groups during a wave of prosecutions by Pitt's government after the French Revolution. In 1793, five men were tried for sedition in highly politicized proceedings, among them Muir and Gerrald. The trials predictably resulted in guilty verdicts. Muir and Gerrald were both sentenced to fourteen years' transportation to the Australian penal colony of Botany Bay. Gerrald died there in 1796; Muir managed to escape, but his health was ruined as a result and he died in 1798. The five activists tried between 1793 and 179. 2 titles in 1. New York: Samuel Campbell, 1794. (illustrator).

Gerrald, a radical political activist and reformer, was a member of the Society for Constitutional Information and the London Corresponding Society. During a wave of prosecutions of radical activists after the French Revolution, Gerrald was arrested along with four of his colleagues and tried for sedition. Like others carried out during this time, the trials resulted in guilty verdicts; the group of Scottish activists tried between 1793 and 1794 are often referred to as the "Scottish Martyrs." Gerrald was sentenced to fourteen years' transportation and died in 1796 in Botany Bay. Other American editions were published by Campbell the same year. Remembered today as a general in the U.S. Army during the Civil War, Butler [1818-1893] was a leading Massachusetts trial lawyer who practiced in Lowell and Boston. Later, he was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, where he played a central role in the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson, and governor of Massachusetts. Hiram Scofield [1830-1906] was a prominent lawyer and Civil War colonel. A dedi. New York: Samuel Campbell, 1794. (illustrator).
