Forged i…n the fires of the 9/11 attacks, the war includes campaigns against al Qaeda, major conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, and operations in the Horn of Africa, the Republic of the Philippines, and globally, in the air and on the sea. The authors herein treat only the campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq, the largest U.S. efforts. It is intended for future senior officers, their advisors, and other national security decision makers. By derivation, it is also a book for students in joint professional military education courses, which will qualify them to work in the field of strategy. While the book tends to focus on strategic decisions and developments of land wars among the people, it acknowledges that the status of the United States as a great power and the strength of its ground forces depend in large measure on the dominance of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force in their respective domains. Contributors include Frank G. Hoffman, G. Alexander Crowther, Christopher Lamb, Megan Franco, T. X. Hammes, Nicholas Rostow, Harvey Rishikof, Sara Thannhauser, and Christoff Luehrs. This assessment proceeds from two guiding sets of questions about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The core set of questions was suggested by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs: What did we gain? What did we lose? What costs did the United States pay for its response to 9/11, particularly from operations in Afghanistan and Iraq? How should the answers to these questions inform senior military leaders' contributions to future national security and national military strategy? The second set of questions proceeds from the first: what are the strategic "lessons learned" (or "lessons encountered," as the British and the authors of this work prefer) of our experience in Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) in Afghanistan, and Operations Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and New Dawn in Iraq.

["In 1866, the botanist Joseph Dalton Hooker (1817-1911) delivered a lecture to the British Association for the Advancement of Science in Nottingham, U.K. entitled Insular floras. The le…cture has been described as "the first systematic statement of the importance of islands for evolutionary studies". As such, it can be seen to have contributed to the development of the "natural laboratory paradigm" that views islands as model systems for studying ecology and evolution. Hooker's lecture also highlighted another key driver in shaping island diversity patterns, namely human impact. How and when does human impact compromise the uti lity of islands as 'natural laboratories' for studying evolution? To date, no fewer than eight "shortfalls" knowledge gaps that impact on studies of biodiversity have been described. In this paper, we suggest that a further shortfall is in order a Hookerian shortfall to account for uncertainty in the extent to which biodiversity patterns reflect natural rather than anthropogenic processes. Handsome very good indeed set with slight rubbing.

Vols 1 and 2 are bound in a black half morocco with green morocco eff…ect boards. TEG. Slight creasing to the first few pages of Vol 1, a few minor scuffs to the bindings of both volumes. The supplementary volumes which are dated between 1886 and 1940, are bound in green gilt lettered cloth, they are very good clean copies with slight shelf wear here and there, minor offsetting to feps, and the occasional bumped corner. Generally very good. This is a heavy set and may require additional postage if being shipped outside of Europe. Large 4to.
