Although the illustrator of this adventure story for boys was born in England, he spent time in Western Australia teaching, painting and making prints. Slight bumping to head and tail of spine, but with no loss or splitting. Light foxing to text block, otherwise a very good copy of the first edition, free from any library stamps, inscriptions or other markings.

Published by Ja.s Stewart & Co., Apl. 20th, 1797; Catherine of Medici extorting from her son Charles IX the order for the Massacre of St. Bartholomew. [Engraved by Bowes ater Singleton]. Published by Jas. Stewart & Co. July 28th 1797. The plates appeared as engravings within the 4-volume American edition of Gifford's History of France (Philadelphia: 1796-97) Evans 30489, 32189, 32190 and 33796. However the present versions are unusually printed on blue paper usually reserved for wrappers. Although suggested as proofs, given the difficulty in viewing the details of the engravings on blue paper it seems more likely to have indeed been used as wrappers of some kind. However, the folds of the paper show the images on the wrong side, i.e. what would be the rear wrapper. We have never before encountered similar.
