Fine bust-length portrait of the young king in military uniform, mounted on the original pr…inted carte de visite inscribed "König von Baiern". The reverse retains the distinctive red B.K. Éditeur (Paris) backmark, indicating contemporary commercial distribution through the Parisian market and reflecting the international popularity of royal portrait photography during the 1870s. The device comprises the monogram "BK" enclosed within a circular belt ornamented with a Greek key motif, from which radiant rays emerge above a wreath of laurel leaves. This photograph corresponds to the example preserved in the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, Vienna (Sign. Pf 1124:B (23a)), and served as the photographic prototype for the well-known engraved portrait published shortly thereafter. Printed by the celebrated Munich court photographer Joseph Albert, one of nineteenth-century Germany's foremost photographers, a pioneer of photographic printing, and inventor of the Alberttype photomechanical process. A remarkably well-preserved example with strong tonal range, excellent contrast, and a clean original mount. A museum-quality example in exceptional original condition. Among the finest surviving contemporary Joseph Albert cartes de visite of King Ludwig II to appear on the market in recent years. Condition: Excellent. Albumen print with rich tonal range and strong contrast; original mount exceptionally clean with only very light age toning and minimal handling wear. An unusually well-preserved example.
