Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. No Jacket. 307 pages plus index (complete). Volume 1 only. 'The Spectator' was a daily publication from the early Eighteenth Century. This copy, given its age, is in contented and comfortable condition. The leather cover is much worn and marked and scuffed. It is secure and benign. Within, there is age related foxing throughout. However, the pages are mild, clear, assured, utterly companionable, with a presence and perception that rings agreeable even now. A sure book. fk. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Binding: Full Contemporary Calf Leather Condition: Good to Very Good (Period Wear / Unique Provenance) An appealing 1769 Edinburgh printing of Volume I of Joseph Addison's "Miscellaneous Works in Verse and Prose," printed and sold by J. Robertson. This volume features the essential foundational biographical prefix, "some Account of the Life and Writings of the Author," compiled by his close friend and literary executor, Thomas Tickell. What elevates this copy is its outstanding regional provenance. The upper margin of the title page bears an elegant, crisp 19th-century ownership inscription in iron gall ink: "Eliza Galt, Coleraine June 16th 1804." Furthermore, the rear flyleaf contains detailed, hand-inked cross-references highlighting specific tourist locations (including Marino, Loretto, Vesuvius, Capua, Rome, and Geneva) alongside specialized subjects like "Musick" and "a Hermit." This reveals that a member of the prominent Galt family utilized this compendium as a direct scholarly guide to Addison's famous Italian travelogues contained within the set. Binding: Housed in its genuine 18th-century full calf leather binding. The spine showcases traditional raised bands, blind tooling, and remnants of the original gilt-lettered leather labels ("ADDISON"). The leather demonstrates genuine historic shelf wear, rubbing to the outer joints and spine extremities, and lightly bumped corners, holding a lovely antique patina.Interior: Complete through the final index pages. The textual blocks remain firm, tight, and well-attached to the binding structures. The handmade rag paper displays natural light toning and faint, isolated foxing spots, but remains remarkably crisp, clean, and flexible.Inscriptions & Markings: Clear, un-smudged provenance markings including the 1804 Galt signature on the title page and a highly legible, hand-written travelers' location guide on the terminal flyleaf. This scarce 1769 Scottish imprint by J. Robertson highlights the widespread popularity of Addison's prose in Enlightenment-era Britain outside of London. Curated originally by Thomas Tickell, this collection preserved Addison's celebrated poems, stage plays, and travel observations for the generations of Grand Tourists who followed in his footsteps. The "Advertisement" Page: The left side clarifies that this 4-volume set—when combined with standalone editions of The Tatler, The Spectator, The Guardian, and The Freeholder—forms a comprehensive collection of Addison's life works in a "Twelves" (duodecimo) format. This 1769 edition is printed in a compact duodecimo (12mo) format (measuring approximately 6 x 4.25 inches).…
