Otakar Storch-Marien (1897-1974) was a writer, poet, and the publisher of the Aventinum publishing house. He also founded the Kmen modern publishing…club and bookstore, the central locus of Czech literary modernism in Prague. Josef Šima (1891-1971) spent most of his mature years in France, but collaborated frequently with the Aventinum press in a series of important editions as illustrator during rhe interwar era. Venus with a Red Wig is a loose continuation of the book Lide z baru (People from the Bar), which Šíma also illustrated. For Venus, Šíma drew fourteen ink pen-and-ink drawings that, with their lightness and lyricism (in several drawings with an erotic accent), elevate the verses of the author. This copy signed by Storch-Marien. The original wrappers were extremely fragile and often missing. Here the front wrapper is preserved in a later paper cover. Josef Šima (illustrator). (Of Many Nights) Large octavo 21x14.8 cm., wrappers, 72pp. With five drawings by Josef Šima, title by Jan Zrzavý, This copy No. 38 of 50 on Japan paper and signed by the author. Known as "odd man out" of the Czech literary world, who influenced and was influenced by Kafka, Weiner (1884-1937) stil…l remains unknown outside of Czech readers. His poetry absorbed the influence of Vildrac and Duhamel and became increasingly surrealist by this date; he was close to René Daumal and Le Grand Jeu during his extended stay in Paris. Weiner is recognized to be on par with Kafka in the Czech Republic, and his works are firstly in Czech. His prose and novels are treasures awaiting discovery by a larger, global readership. This is a fine bibliophile production, containing Weiner's most important verse and abstract surrealist drawings by Weiner's close friend Josef Šima.
