Small scuff on the top left side of the front cover. Bottom of the spine slightly bumped. Interior with minor signs of wear. Very good condition overall.; "Global by Design: Chinese Ceramics from the R. Albuquerque Collection", focusing on Chinese ceramics of the late 16th to the 18th century, a period during which they became a global luxury, transforming both the European ceramic industry and also the styles of dining and drinking. The exhibition comprises 48 entries with 60 exquisite and unusual pieces from an important Brazilian private collection, never exhibited before, exploring the way in which 18th-century artists, when faced with the global idioms that had developed at the time, made artistic choices that allowed them to create an endless range of spectacular and visually imaginative works. This presentation will challenge the tradition of cataloguing Chinese ceramics as domestic or trade items. Besides exploring the trade in Chinese ceramics within Asia, the exhibition focus on the development of shapes and designs that reflect the history of exchange between China and the Islamic world as well as the period - the late 16th century - when works reflecting both the Chinese and Islamic traditions were introduced and incorporated into Europe and the Americas. Introduction by Denise Patry Leidy, Brooke Russell Astor Curator of Chinese Art, of the Metropolitan Museum of Arts, and entries by Maria Antónia Pinto de Matos, director of the Tile Museum in Lisbon and expert in Chinese export ceramics. The same author, Maria Antónia Pinto de Matos, has written The RA Collection: A Collector's Vision published by Jorge Welsh Books in 2011. The reference book on Chinese export porcelain, a three-volume boxed set of hardcover books containing more than 900 illustrations, is a work of art in itself. The 1200 pages include chapters on earthenware, stoneware, porcelain of the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, works with Western shapes and decoration and armorial Chinese export porcelain in the RA Collection.

Interior with minor signs of wear.; Exhibition catalogue which explores the range and virtuosity of the representation of the human figure in Chinese porcelain. Showcasing objects made in the three successive reigns of Kangxi (1662-1722), Yongzheng (1723-1735) and Qianlong (1736-1795), the catalogue highlights the extraordinary ability of the Chinese potter to transform clay into intricate figures, bestowing on them the strong expressive characteristics and symbolic powers that have long been a tradition in Chinese ceramics. Included are figures representing both Asian and Western people, which helped set the stage for a growing fashion in Europe throughout the 18th century for decorative porcelain figurines made in China. Some of the 53 individual figures discussed and illustrated in the 35 catalogue entries are purely Chinese in subject matter, while others are copied from European models; some were created as religious icons for private use, and others fed the European appetite for 'chinoiserie' displays. Moulded in Dehua and Jingdezhen, all of these figures helped facilitate an understanding and awareness among Chinese and Europeans of their respective cultures, while also inspiring some compelling interpretations, and encouraged European artisans, such as those working at Meissen, to produce sculptural objects synonymous with rococo art. The catalogue includes an article by Rose Kerr on the history and evolution of the representation of the human form in Chinese ceramic art.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. No Jacket. 1st Edition. English text.; Hardcover (without dust jacket).; 23.5 x 29.7 cm.; 0.8 Kg.; 70 pages with 72 colour illustrations.; The Vases of the 'Hundred Treasures' accompanies the 20th annual exhibition of export art at Jorge Welsh Works of Art. This catalogue is part of the three-volume box set Treasures, alongside Pocket Treasures: Snuff Boxes from Past Times and Timeless Treasure: The Runic Calendar Staff. A pair of vases decorated with the Chinese subject of the 'hundred treasures' adapted to suit foreign tastes is the focus of the catalogue of the same name. Dating to the Yongzheng period (1723-1735) and depicting a continuous composition of antiques, flowers and animals, these famille rose vases are among the best export wares produced in the 18th century. Western designations for the 'hundred treasures' subject derive in a literal sense from the Chinese expression baibao, in which bai or 'hundred' stands for 'many', although the subject itself is historically known in China as 'antique objects' or bogu. Visually similar to the European 'still life' genre, bogu is more specific in that the objects depicted have a high value because of their age, quality and provenance. The Vases of the 'Hundred Treasures' brings to light the multiple auspicious designs that decorate these extraordinary vases.

This catalogue is part of the three-volume box set Treasures, alongside Pocket Treasures: Snuff Boxes from Past Times and Timeless Treasure: The Runic Calendar Staff. The mysterious symbols that decorate a rare enamelled copper staff are uncovered for the modern viewer in Timeless Treasure: The Runic Calendar Staff. Displaying a runic calendar based on a Swedish model of circa 1750, this staff is among the few copper objects enamelled with Western designs in China during the 18th century. Runic calendar staffs are so called due to the theme of their decoration, which comprises inscriptions with runes forming a perpetual calendar, or almanac. Wooden staffs of this type were important timekeeping devices in Scandinavia in use from at least the 12th century. With only four comparable examples known to survive in museum collections, this study adds to a growing body of literature on Chinese enamelled copper wares.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. No Jacket. 1st Edition. English text; Hardcover; 240 pages with 220 colour illustrations; 24.1 x 30.6 cm; 1.8 kg; Catalogue for the exhibition held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; "Global by Design: Chinese Ceramics from the R. Albuquerque Collection", focuses on Chinese ceramics of the late 16th to the 18th century, a period during which they became a global luxury, transforming both the European ceramic industry and also the styles of dining and drinking.

Remaining interior in very good condition. Very good condition overall.; Exhibition catalogue.; "I have bought some china here - of a very particular sort; its greatest merit is being entirely new. They are of metal, enamelled inside and out with china of all colour.". In a letter from The Hague of 13th August 1728, the British Ambassador, Philip Dormer Stanhope regaled Henrietta Howard, Countess of Suffolk (1689-1767), with news of an exciting discovery. Describing a very particular sort of ware, wrought in metal and painted with china of all colours, the Earl's account is one of the earliest known records of Chinese painted enamels on copper in the West. This intriguing but little-studied group of objects were developed during the first half of the 18th century, predominately produced in the Qianlong period (1736-1795) and continuing into the 19th century. Made for the export and domestic markets, as well for the imperial courts in Beijing, this type of ware was referred to as yang ci in Chinese literally - 'foreign porcelain' - becoming known as 'Canton enamel' after the main centre of production in China. Produced in a range of forms, these copper objects were coated with an initial layer of white or turquoise enamel and over-decorated with designs in polychrome enamels, some of which are comparable to those found on Chinese porcelain. This catalogue and accompanying exhibition of over 160 enamelled copper pieces provides a valuable opportunity to study a variety of shapes and decorative motifs, to pose some questions concerning the medium's history, while exploring the possible formal and decorative links with China's principal artistic export, porcelain.;"This catalogue is a welcome addition to the existing literature on Chinese export art. Focusing on a relatively little know and studied area - enamel painted on copper - it provides a comprehensive survey of past works on the subject, a well documented article by Christian Jörg, and a rich catalogue subdivided in 93 entries illustrating more than 160 objects, mainly from the 18th century and collected in Europe and the Americas.(.) This catalogue will certainly become one of the standard references on Chinese painted enamels and its clear summary of previous works and a comprehensive mapping of key collections should encourage further research in the fields of technology, consumption and cultural exchange." excerpt from the book review by Luisa Mengoni published in The Art Newspaper, section 2, number 283, October 2016.

Interior as new.; Exhibition catalogue dedicated to the theme of Japanese porcelain in the form of human and animal figures, mostly produced for the export market during the second half of the 17th and 18th centuries. The animals represented are usually found amongst Japanese iconography, whilst the human figures are inspired by Japanese cosmopolitan society, deities and legendary local heroes. The nature of the trade for Japanese porcelain has determined the rarity of these pieces, which, combined with their decorative, formal beauty, as well as their quality, made them highly appreciated in Europe, and may also have appealed to the Japanese domestic market. This catalogue presents over 100 individual pieces, of which 75 are illustrated and discussed in the catalogue, along with an introductory article by Professor Christiaan Jörg. Through extensive documentation and supporting images, he analyses various aspects related to the theme of Japanese porcelain figures, including the origin and presence of these pieces in the most relevant European collections from the second half of the 17th century.

Interior with minor signs of wear.; Exhibition catalogue; Famille verte biscuit wares are an important but so far little-studied group of refined Chinese porcelain made at the imperial kilns of Jingdezhen primarily during the Kangxi period (1662-1722). This group is defined by both the method of decoration and the colour palette, which is frequently dominated by green enamel. Presenting an extremely diverse range of shapes, including figurines and animals, small practical items for use within the Chinese domestic environment and religious icons, this group is as complicated as it is fascinating. Together they open a window on Chinese culture and society, through which the production and consumption of Chinese ceramics can also be studied. Famille verte biscuit wares became increasingly fashionable for the European market at this time; while most were collected as curiosities, others were made directly for this market. Indeed, the production of famille verte biscuit wares reflects the particular circumstances of trade between East and West during this period.

Minor bump on the bottom of the front cover. Interior with minor signs of wear. Very good condition overall.; Exhibition catalogue; Ko-sometsuke ('old blue and white') porcelain was produced specifically for the Japanese market during the final decades of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). The lack of Chinese imperial patronage during this period prompted the potters at the Jingdezhen kilns, Jiangxi province, to seek out new markets for their porcelain. This coincided with the rising popularity of the tea ceremony in Japan, which required a number of different utensils. Fulfilling the orders that followed from Japanese tea masters resulted in the flourishing of Chinese porcelain trade to Japan at this time. Ko-sometsuke wares were made to Japanese taste, in an astonishing variety of odd, asymmetrical and occasionally humorous forms. In contrast to the traditional blue and white wares produced at Jingdezhen, ko-sometsuke porcelain was deliberately potted in a rough manner from poorly levigated clay, and bears numerous flaws and imperfections as a result. The mushikui or 'moth-eaten' edges', which are so prevalent among these wares, were particularly prized in Japan. This catalogue will present an intriguing group of ko-sometsuke food dishes, known as mukozuke, which were used during the tea ceremony. The pieces in this group were produced in a variety of shapes, which include amongst others, fish, horses, oxen, leaves, peaches, aubergines, shells, fans and musical instruments. The sheer diversity of unique shapes amongst these mukozuke alone is not only a testament to this highly creative period at Jingdezhen. It is also representative of the adaptable nature of the Chinese potters and the cultural interactions between China and Japan during this period.
