This volume consists of a ninth edition (1904) which has been revised and enlarged, a first edition (1898), and second edition (1904), bound as one by the publisher. This volume is illustrated throughout. Book I, the ninth edition, 56 plates, 4 coloured and 1 of which is a fold-out. book II. the first edition, contains 25 plates, 2 coloured. Book III, the second edition contains 44 plates, 4 of which are coloured. Each having an intricately illustrated frontispiece. Collated, complete. This text was designed to support engineering students in mastering mechanical drawing techniques, a foundational skill in early 20th century technical education. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, in very good condition, with some bumping and shelf wear to extremities. The odd handling mark to boards. Slight offsetting to endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean, with some age toning and the odd pencil inscription from previous owner. The odd spot closer to the fore edge. Oblong 8vo, blue printed paper wrappers, sewn (edges of booklet covers are chipped but otherwise near fine, although lacking the original cardboard box. Manchester and London: John Heywood, 1902. A very good copy of this uncommon item -- an interesting example of paper engineering. An unusual educational device, used to show the workings of piston and steam engines and valves. The intricate models are comprised of riveted printed cardstock, demonstrating the active engine parts. The 6 plates are in excellent working order, but lacking the original cardboard box.
