paperback. Zustand: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.…

Consisting of a source book, two sets of cards and a CD/DVD, the pack is based on three basic precepts: the best way to understand Shakespeare is to act, students should be encouraged to use their imaginations, and there is no substitute for learning the texts by heart." The book is illustrated by actor Clive Francis, also a highly regarded theatrical caricaturist. Condition: Very good condition but there is a little yellowing to the covers. "In 1800 Sir William Herschel carried out a series of experiments to determine the distribution of heating power among the various colours in the solar spectrum. He explored a prismatic spectrum projected on a table, using as a heat detector a sensitive mercury-in-glass thermometer which could be moved along the spectrum. He was surprised to find that the heating power increased towards the red end of the spectrum and did not reach a maximum till the thermometer had been moved beyond the limit of the visible spectrum. He thus established the existence of a form of radiant energy which is refracted by a prism, is less refrangible than red light, and to which the eye is insensitive."Ex private military library stock, so in better condition than most library books. In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Fine. No Jacket. lxvii, 760 pages : illustrations ; 29 cm OCLC 52073501 This reprint of the first edition of Sweet's Catalog commemorates the 90th anniversary of the Sweet's business."--Foreword ; "In offering to the public, and especially to the architects of the United States, the first edition of Sweet's Indexed Catalogue of Building Construction, the publishers have realized at the very outset the importance of stating clearly, first, what the book is, and secondly, the reasons for commending it to the architectural profession for their use and support. .to explain in a few words the character and purpose of the work, . a embodied in these first successful efforts toward a really scientific standard catalogue and index of building materials and construction. Let the matter be looked at entirely from the point of view of the architect. For a period of a dozen years, every possible method of collecting, sorting, classifying, filing and indexing all the catalogues and circulars of building materials was conscientiously given a fair trial, and after a thorough test, every method was just as conscientiously abandoned. They were abandoned because they did not work well in the specification room. They were not practicable. Everything was tried, arrangements of shelves, bookcases, pasteboard boxes, filing cases, patent binders, filing cabinets, cases of drawers, indexing schemes and " index- rerums. " At first, all the big books were put together in one place and all the little books in another place; and then all the big and little books were mixed up together, and indexed according to subject. Some had four pages, and some had four hundred pages. Barely two were of the same shape or superficies. The little ones would not stand up, and could not be gotten at when laid flat. Another elaborate system was introduced, and a voluminous cross-index started, but the big books contained too much useless matter, and the little books got lost or mislaid or could not be found just when wanted. Then the writer decided, after much time and expense, that the present system of publishing and distributing catalogues, as far as the architect is concerned, might be rightly termed " The Catalogue Delusion, " and that the only solution of the problem must lie in a scientific standard catalogue and index of building materials and construction, gradually developed toward an ideal result by the co-operation of manufacturer and architect. Briefly, then, what is Sweet's Indexed Catalogue of Building Construction? It is a scientific catalogue book system ( a volume or series of volumes) , as easy to refer to as a dictionary, consisting of groups of catalogues from which as much unnecessary matter as possible has been eliminated, carefully indexed and cross- indexed, and sent out gratuitously by the publishers to every architect of good standing. Each catalogue in the work is organically arranged in its parts. It proceeds in a regular order from fact " A " to fact " Z " . Illustrations of a certain class are all grouped and arranged according to some obvious plan. " Literature " and " mere writing " are omitted, as an architect has no time in his office for either."; authors and compilers include Wm. Martin Aiken, Claire Allen, J. M. Baillie, Charles I. "Ballard''s novels stand among the most visionary, provocative literature of the twentieth century, with his ominous predictions regarding the fate of Western culture and his insights into the dark psychopathology of the human race. This exhibition is a response to the enormous impact and enduring cultural significance of his work, following his death in spring 2009. Highlighting Ballard''s great passion for the surreal and his engagement with the artists of his own generation, Crash includes examples of his specific inspirations as well as works by contemporary artists who have, in turn, been inspired by his vision." -- publisher''s statement. Owen Jones, the son of a wealthy Welsh antiquarian, was apprenticed to a London architect at the age of 15 and embarked on the traditional young man's Grand Tour at 23. He traveled through Italy, Greece, Turkey, and Egypt before arriving in Spain, recording and analyzing the decorative patterns common to each country. Jones and his traveling companion were so taken with the Spanish Moorish palace El Alhambra they spent six months drawing and painting its details. Jones' determination to do justice to the work upon his return to England led him to postpone its publication to study the new art of chromolithography, in which brilliant color images were produced by carefully layering impressions from multiple stones, each inked in a different color. Plans, Elevations and Details of the Alhambra made Jones' reputation after it was finally published in the 1840s, and he was appointed Superintendent of Works for the Great Exhibition of 1851, designing the Crystal Palace's interior decoration. The Exhibition's display of art and industry from around the world enthralled the six million people who came to see it, priming the public to appreciate the monumental study of ornamental design that Owens published five years later. About 700 stones were used to print its hundred numbered plates at enormous expense, an undertaking that few publishers but Day and Son could have carried out. The patterns were taken from the architecture, ceramics, textiles, and stained glass of Europe, Asia, and Oceania (the last unfortunately titled "Ornament of Savage Tribes"). Design manual, treatise, and luxury art object, The Grammar of Ornament became a standard reference for design schools and played a key role in bringing the process of chromolithography to the attention of the wider public. Jones sought to prove the existence of fundamental design principles across cultures, and began his work with thirty-seven propositions for decorative artists, the most quoted of which is Proposition 2: "Architecture is the material expression of the wants, the faculties, and the sentiments, of the age in which it is created." This copy is from the library of Robert Stacy-Judd (1884 - 1975), an English architect who incorporated Mayan designs into his buildings, most famously in the Aztec Hotel on Route 66. His work is a tribute to the book's timelessness: the Art Deco gem on America's most famous highway is very much a product of its fast-paced age, but the dense ornamentation is applied in the spirit of Owen Jones. Jones' groundbreaking work has never gone out of print, but it has never been printed on such a scale and with such care as in its glorious first edition.…
