Hardback. Zustand: Very good condition. This volume presents two histories of the early Korean kingdom of Paekche (trad. 18 BCE-660 CE). The first, written by Jonathan Best, is based largely on primary sources, both written and archaeological. This initial history of Paekche serves, in part, to introduce the second, an extensively annotated translation of the oldest history of the kingdom, the Paekche Annals (Paekche pon'gi). Written in the chronicle format standard for the traditional official histories of East Asia, the Paekche Annals constitutes one section of the Histories of the Three Kingdoms (Samguk sagi), a comprehensive account of early Korean history compiled under the editorial direction of Kim Pusik (1075-1151). Although these two representations of Paekche history differ markedly, the underlying problem faced by both the twelfth-century and the twenty-first-century historian is essentially the same: fashioning a responsible, encompassing, and reasonably coherent history of the kingdom from meager, and often disparate and fragmentary, evidence.Harvard East Asian Monographs 256. Included in the volume are 22 appendixes on problems in Paekche history; a concordance of proper names, official titles, omens, and weights and measures; a glossary of geographical names; and six historical maps of the kingdom showing its changing boundaries. 3.98 Centimeters X 17.03 Centimeters X 23.83 Centimeters.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. The dust jacket shows edge wear, scuffs and scratches on the front cover, spine and back cover. Interior with signs of wear.; Published on the occasion of the opening of the Arts of Korea Gallery at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the inaugural exhibition Arts of Korea, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, June 9, 1998-January 24, 1999.; Of all the cultural and artistic traditions of East Asia, those of Korea have received the least attention in the West. This volume, along with the major exhibition it accompanies, examines the most significant developments in the history of Korean art, from the Neolithic period to the nineteenth century, through outstanding examples of Korea's artistic achievements. Written by leading Korean art scholars and drawing upon the latest research in Korean art studies, the book examines stylistic characteristics and technical innovations in four major areas: ceramics, Buddhist sculpture, painting, metalwork and decorative arts. Attention is given to the political, social, and cultural conditions that led to the creation of the works of art, in particular the Korean peninsula's external relationships and inter- changes with China on the continental mainland to the north and west and with the Japanese archipelago to the south. The exhibition, the first comprehensive display of masterworks of Korean art presented in the United States in nearly twenty years, was organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art to coincide with the opening of the Museum's new, permanent Arts of Korea Gallery. Drawn from the collections of The National Museum of Korea, impor- tant private collections in Korea, Japan, and the United States, and the Metropolitan Museum's own holdings, the works in the exhibition represent the finest examples of Korean art in all major media. They have been chosen on the basis of their place in the historical development of Korean art, their manifestation of important changes in tech- nique and style, and their representation of Korean aesthetics. During the past two decades, significant advancements in art historical scholarship in Korea and new archaeological discoveries throughout the peninsula have led to a more thorough and critical assessment of Korean art. This scholarly publication will bring to the Western audience a greater awareness and understanding of the very special and distinctive cultural and artistic legacy of Korea.

First published in 1824, this was the first American treatise on the law concerning streams, rivers and artificial waterways. It addressed a need for an exposition of the legal issues that responded to the rapid growth of water-powered industry and water-borne transportation during the nineteenth century. Regarding the first edition, Kent noted, "No intelligent lawyer can well practice without" this book. In successive editions, it remained a standard work for the rest of the century. This edition was heavily updated to include new legal precedents and matters that had developed since the original publication. Kent, Commentaries on American Law III:453.
