First Chief Justice of Nova Scotia (1710-76). Flyleaf detached from octavo volume and neatly mounted on piece of white card, itself mounted on larger piece of grey card. While the mounts are in good condition the leaf itself is poor, discoloured and stained. Reads in top left-hand corner 'Jonathn Belcher | August. 1754.' Also present are signatures of 'Hawkins | London' and 'Jn L. Lee | 1870'. Typed note at foot of leaf reads: 'Autograph of "Colin Campbell" on other side of this fly leaf.' Campbell's signature is pasted to white card, but may become visible through expert detachment of leaf from mount. A printed note reads 'Colin Campbell, a later owner of the volume, whose autograph appears on the end-paper, served during the American Revolution as lieutenant of the 74th regiment. Manuscript note on grey mount confounds Belcher with his father, also Jonathan Belcher and 'first mason in America - Born in Cambridge'. But the hand is that of a young man and Belcher's father's dates are 1681/2-1757. See Image.…

This volume serves as a vital artifact of the legal framework governing the Protestant Ascendancy, systematically indexing Irish parliamentary enactments alongside English statutes binding upon the Kingdom of Ireland under Poynings' Law and the Declaratory Act of 1720. The extensive apparatus is especially notable for administrative and social historians: it features distinct tables cross-referencing Irish acts derived from English models, statutes required to be charged at the Assizes and Quarter-Sessions, and penal and civic decrees explicitly enjoined to be read aloud from church pulpits to ensure public compliance. This interesting letter is addressed to Belcher as govenor of N.H. and concerns the "swapping" of a horse, "a Mair." The transaction was a bit shady and a controversy resulted, with Samuel Bickford hastening to "Gov. Belcher for redress. The document is signed by Belcher on the verso. Also signed by Richard Waldron as secretary. Belcher is remem=bered for leaving his library of 374 volumes to the College of New Jersey (Princeton). DAB, II, pp. 143-144. Signed.…
