Esta obra es una crónica cotidiana de la Costa Brava en los años treinta, un dietario de los últimos años de la República y de la guerra civil, pero también un entrañable relato de las peripecias desde la transformación del hotel en una colonia humanitaria para niños hasta el cruce de la frontera francesa. En 1934, la joven Nancy Johnstone y su marido, periodista del News Chronicle, decidieron abandonar Londres para construir un hotel en la pequeña localidad de Tossa de Mar, en la Costa Brava (Girona). Eran tiempos de descubrimiento de un paisaje y de un país, pero pronto el interés turístico de los huéspedes ingleses dio paso a la visita de corresponsales de guerra, poetas y pintores simpatizantes con la causa republicana. En 1936, el estallido de la guerra civil española destruyó para siempre aquel paraíso.
