Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Sir Reginald Fleming Johnston (1874-1938) was a colonial administrator and scholar with a lifelong fascination with China who was appointed tutor to the young Puyi (1906-1967), who became emperor at the age of two. Johnston was highly favoured by the emperor, receiving several imperial titles and residing in the Forbidden City. His account of his time as Puyi's tutor, Twilight in the Forbidden City, also reissued in this series, was dramatised in the film The Last Emperor. Previously, Johnston had served in a variety of colonial service positions, including three years as commissioner of the British-held territory of Weihaiwai. This book, first published in 1910, is Johnston's examination of Weihaiwei, which he considered to be a microcosm of Chinese life. Writing with obvious affection, Johnston outlines the history, culture, festivals and local folklore of Weihaiwei and explores what the future could hold for the city. …

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - British academic and diplomat Reginald Fleming Johnston (1874-1938) published Twilight in the Forbidden City in 1934. The work is a memoir of Johnston's time in Beijing between 1919 and 1924, at the court of the Qing Dynasty, where he served as tutor to Aisin-Gioro Puyi (1906-1967), last emperor of China. Johnston was one of only two foreigners who were permitted to enter the imperial palace, and so his account provides a unique Western perspective on the epochal events of the period. The work has a preface by the emperor Puyi and includes detailed descriptions of palace rituals, including Puyi's wedding ceremony; translations of key documents; Johnston's perspective on the revolution of 1911 and the 1917 restoration; his observations on Chinese society as a whole; and eye-witness accounts of the political intrigues of the palace. The memoir was dramatised in Bernardo Bertolucci's cinematic masterpiece, The Last Emperor.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover, 24 x 16 cm, 486 pp., English, 1st Edition, Illustrations, book condition: Very Good This book is the famous memoir by Sir Reginald Fleming Johnston, who served from 1919 to 1924 as the private tutor and advisor to Puyi, the last emperor of China. First published in 1934 by Victor Gollancz Ltd., the book provides a unique eyewitness account of the final years of the Qing Dynasty within the walls of the imperial palace. The work is more than just a portrait of the emperor; it is an extensive history of a turbulent era in China: As one of only two foreigners allowed into the "Inner Court," Johnston provides detailed descriptions of palace ritualssuch as Puyi's weddingand the political intrigues of the time. Johnston was a great admirer of Chinese culture and an advocate for a constitutional monarchy based on the British model. He was critical of the young Republic of China and often defended the interests of the imperial family. The book features a preface written by Puyi himself (dated 1931) and covers key events including the 1911 Revolution and the emperor's ultimate expulsion from the Forbidden City in 1924. The linen binding is discoloured. Light foxing on the first and last pages. Corners bumped. [This description may have been translated by AI.].…

Hardcover, 22.5 x 15 cm, 461 pp., English, 1st Edition, Illustrations, book condition: Very Good This is a seminal work by Sir Reginald Fleming Johnston, a British colonial administrator and scholar best known as the tutor to Puyi, the last Emperor of China. The book is a detailed anthropological and historical account of Weihaiwei (modern-day Weihai), a territory in northern China leased to Great Britain from 1898 to 1930. Johnston served there as a district officer and magistrate, using his position to conduct "assiduous research" into the region's culture. [This description may have been translated by AI.].…

Paperback. Zustand: Good+. Original green cloth, spine faded. Mild wear to top corners and top spine. Rear endpaper uncracked at gutter, front endpaper just starting. Mild foxing to page edges. No foxing / browning to endpapers or title page. 43 plates. Folding copy of document (partly in red), 2 tissue maps, 1 folding. First edition, fourth impression: the first impression was published the same year. Johnston's preface to the fourth impression, p. 6, notes that in this impression he has been authorised to reveal the identity of a 'foreign minister' mentioned on pp. 324-334, in fact the Dutch diplomat W. J. Oudendijk, who was involved in a failed attempt by the young emperor Puyi to escape from the Forbidden City, where he had been allowed to remain with his retinue, retaining his imperial title though not his power, after his abdication in the wake of the 1911 Revolution. Reginald Johnston (1874-1938), colonial administrator and Sinologist, served as tutor and advisor to Puyi from late 1918 to 1924, when Puyi was finally expelled from the Forbidden City. Johnston's 'linguistic talents, and sensitivity and sympathy for traditional China', saw him established not merely as a tutor but as the titular emperor's 'confidante and adviser in internal palace affairs (notably a long struggle to outwit the imperial eunuchs) and relations with the merry-go-round of warlord presidents' (ODNB). Puyi's high regard for his old tutor is displayed in his 1931 preface to this volume: 'As a writer and as a man Johnston is one who is not surpassed by the best of our native scholars'. Twilight in the Forbidden City remains a classic account of the last years of the Qing dynasty, and the fourth impression, with its minor revisions, the standard version of the text. Robust packaging. Tracking is always added to USA orders. It can be added to other overseas orders on request. Used books are exempt from USA tariffs. 1st edition, 4th impress. Size: 486pp.…

First edition, with Johnston's London ownership inscription, dated August 1932, on the front free endpaper, his attractive bookplate, and occasional pencilled marginalia. Johnston references this monograph in his classic Twilight in the Forbidden City (1934), though remarks that "I do not concur, however, in all the views of the author, especially with regard to the abilities and 'educability' of the empress-dowager." After overseeing the return of Weihaiwei to China in 1930, Johnston returned to Britain and accepted a professorship at the University of London. His bookplate references the Lejingshanzhai, his private residence in Beijing. An American sinologist, Meribeth Cameron (1905-1997) received her PhD from Stanford in 1928. In 1941, she co-founded the Far Eastern Quarterly, now the Journal of Asian Studies. Large octavo (250 x 175 mm). Strictly contemporary purple buckram, spine letttered in gilt.
