hardcover. Zustand: Good. First Edition. Publication: New York, William Morrow & Company, 1947 Formatting: 8vo, pp. 87. Condition Report: Good. The publisher's terracotta cloth binding remains largely bright and structurally sound, showing only gentle shelf-wear and light bumping to the extremities. The binding is firm and square, and the text block is clean, free of significant foxing or oxidisation. The overall condition is, however, markedly impacted by the original dust jacket. The jacket exhibits significant edge-wear, creasing, and chipping to the head and tail of the spine. Most notably, there are extensive, heavy-handed historic cellotape repairs to the verso of the dust jacket, which have caused substantial adhesive staining and discolouration that mirrors through to the front panels and flaps. While the jacket remains functionally complete, its aesthetic appeal is heavily compromised by these amateur mends. Catalogue Note: This is the first edition in book form of Alva Johnston's study of the legendary mystery writer Erle Stanley Gardner. Copyrighted in 1946 by The Curtis Publishing Company for its initial serialisation and published in 1947 by William Morrow & Company, this volume serves as an authentic contemporary look at the creator of Perry Mason. The book is illustrated with a suite of black-and-white photographs showcasing Gardner at work and leisure at his ranch. While not an especially scarce title on the open market, finding copies with their original dust jackets intact, even with noted faults, remains appealing for collectors of golden age detective fiction and Gardner enthusiasts. A fascinating contemporary portrait of the undisputed king of the American mystery novel, The Case of Erle Stanley Gardner explores the life, methods, and sheer output of the man behind Perry Mason. Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Alva Johnston, this brisk and entertaining biography delves into Gardnerâs legal background, his rigorous writing schedules, and his transition from courtroom attorney to one of the bestselling authors in the world. Providing an intimate glimpse into the author's relentless drive, this book is an essential companion piece for any devoted fan of classic detective fiction. N/A (illustrator). …
