Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Howard Pyle (illustrator). First Edition. Quarto, 344 pages, green clothback, pictorial boards, lower right corner bumped, front free endpaper re-attached. Copyright page code is "B-X", which translates as February, 1923. "The title of this volume was not chosen idly - it was chosen because these Howard Pyle pictures do breathe an 'American Spirit'. Beyond technical excellence which has caused artists to treasure proofs of these pictures, beyond the unquestioned accuracy of costume and setting, is the spiritual, personal something that makes pictures live. Pyle furnishes a window into our American past as given by no word historian: wholesome, homely, full of interest." - Foreword by Merle Johnson. Hundreds of illustrations, nearly every page, many in color.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. Pyle, Howard (illustrator). [2] xiv [1], 247 [5] pp; 12 colour plates and 24 full page drawings, plus illustrations in text, all by Howard Pyle. Tipped in illustration on page three as well as on front board. Date code of I-W indicates that this issue was printed in September 1922, a year after the first edition which was produced in two formats - a trade binding and 50 copies on Japanese Vellum. This volume is quarter-bound in cloth over illustrated buff boards. Small folio. Boards a little rubbed at corners, more so on upper leading corner, and titles on spine faded. Dust jacket is chapped at edges with loss across top of front and rear and on lower rear corner; and has speckled marks, but remains in tact. Previous owner's inscription on half title page, else internally clean crisp and bright. One plate page has been repaired, and dust jacket now in archival wrapper. Pirate gold and pirate adventure held for Howard Pyle - although he was a Quaker artist - and endless fascination; and with his pen and brush he was able to express all the roistering, adventurous, daredevil spirit for which the legendary pirates, such as Blue Beard and Blackbeard, stand. Mr Pyle's well-deserved reputation as an artist rests today largely on his portrayals of pirates. This collection, now hard to find in early editions with dust jackets, of his pirate stories and pirate pictures will appeal to the collector of beautiful books as a fine example of American book-making in the 1920s. As a gift book for anyone who likes stories about pirates, its equal can't be found.

Zustand: Very good. First Edition. Inscribed first edition, an out-of-series copy of the deluxe issue of 50 copies specially printed on Japan vellum, presented by Johnson to the designer of the book. This posthumous collection of Pyle's work on pirates celebrates the influence of the artist on our popular imagination, which is still felt today in the mainstream iconography of pirates: David Cordingly names this book as one of the works that "no doubt helped to fix the image in people's minds" of the black flag with the white skull and crossbones. This copy is inscribed by the compiler to the book's designer: "Extra special copy / for A.W. Rushmore / Whose job suits his name / And who gets away with it -- / As this volume - which reflects / his effort as much as mine -- / will testify - Amen -- / Merle Johnson / Aug 22 - 1921." An excellent association. 12.5'' x 9.5''. Original quarter cream cloth, grey paper boards, spine lettered in gilt, front board lettered in dark grey with full-color pirate vignette tipped onto board and framed by dark grey double-rule, single gilt rule to both boards, all edges uncut. Illustrated by Pyle with 36 full-page tipped-in plates (12 color), three tipped-in vignettes (2 color), and more than two dozen pen-and-ink vignettes throughout text. [2], xviii, 247, [1] pages. Inscribed by Johnson on the limitation page. Light foxing and toning to spine and edges of binding, a bit of rubbing to cover illustration, bumping to corners. Interior a touch toned. Signed.

Zustand des Schutzumschlags: dj. Later printing of the first edition with publisher's code on copyright page "K-E" indicating publication date of October 1930. A remarkably nice copy of this swashbuckling book featuring tales of "Pirates, Buccaneers, [and] Marooners, those cruel but picturesque sea wolves who once infested the Spanish Main" (from Johnson's foreword). Illustrated throughout with line drawings and full-page plates, including a few in color. Housed in the publisher's original paper-covered box with printed label. Box is missing portion of one side from its top but still solid and in generally good shape though showing some damp staining and wear. Both book and dust jacket are fine with only the barest aging and minor wear. Publisher's announcement for reissue of a number of books in Harper's illustrated "Adventure" series laid in (single cream-colored leaf printed in red on both sides; lists books by Twain, Doyle, et al with order form on back). Scarce in such nice shape and with box.
