Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. SECOND PRINTING OF THE FIRST EDITION hardcover (code K-V on copyright page; true first edition had code D-V), quarter-bound in black cloth with brown pictorial board, is in G condition, having tiny tear at bottom of front cover (see photo); some very faint wrinkling to bottom front board also; tipped-in color plate of pirate on front cover shows some very slight wear; back cover shows some light stained area at top; some rubbing wear to spine (see photo); corners lightly bumped and worn; former owner's attractive 1920s-style book plate (un-named) with the motto: "The Poetry of Earth is Never Dead" is on first fixed endpaper (see photo); slight foxing and darkening to endpaper sections; binding is very slightly shaken with threads slightly visibe in first endpaper section (still a very solid copy); dust jacket, enclosed in protective mylar (mylar not pictured), is in G condition, having been re-inforced with ancient tape on inside of jacket (absolutely NO bleed-through of tape on outer dj surface)--this was to repair or prevent small tears to edges which there are a few, as well as some tiny missing pieces from top and bottom jacket spine, and fold areas. Jacket also sports the identical color pirate plate featured on the book's front, also tipped-in (and this has some wear to surface) (see photo); dj also has some rubbing/scuffing, creasing and staining to surface (see photos). A landmark book on imagining the buccaneers of the Spanish Main and elsewhere, with a variety of magazine-published writing by Pyle, compiled by Merle Johnson. Book is illustrated with color plates, b&w plates, and in-text b&w drawings by Howard Pyle. Book also features two color plates not listed on the illustration page: two tipped-in plates, one on p. 232 and the other on p. 239, both illustrating the story of "The Ruby of Kishmoor." Literature. United States. All ages. Classic stories. Pirates. Buccaneers. Freebooters. Caribbean. Adventure tales. Because of the weight of the book, (58 oz), extra shipping cost may apply. [DB 6]. Howard Pyle (illustrator).

dj. Later printing of the first edition with publisher's code on copyright page "K-E" indicating publication date of October 1930. A remarkably nice copy of this swashbuckling book featuring tales of "Pirates, Buccaneers, [and] Marooners, those cruel but picturesque sea wolves who once infested the Spanish Main" (from Johnson's foreword). Illustrated throughout with line drawings and full-page plates, including a few in color. Housed in the publisher's original paper-covered box with printed label. Box is missing portion of one side from its top but still solid and in generally good shape though showing some damp staining and wear. Both book and dust jacket are fine with only the barest aging and minor wear. Publisher's announcement for reissue of a number of books in Harper's illustrated "Adventure" series laid in (single cream-colored leaf printed in red on both sides; lists books by Twain, Doyle, et al with order form on back). Scarce in such nice shape and with box.
