Manuscript poem, five stanzas of eight lines each. Single sheet, 2pp. of text. A note on the verso states the song was composed by Maj'r. Johnson for 4th July 1807. The author begins: "Come, Brother Soldiers, let's unite / With hearts and voices all agree / This day we'll celebrate inspite / Of all the Foes to Liberty." His final two stanzas pay tribute to George Washington as "Dame Fortune's choicest, darling son / The great, the noble Washington." Some separations along old fold lines, but a good, legible example. We have been unable to discover the identity of Maj. Johnson. The United States was at this time attempting to protect its ships and men from impressment and other violations of its neutrality laws by England and France during the Napoleonic Wars. By the end of 1807 President Jefferson approved the Embargo Act to protect American rights and liberties.
