Hätte er es gewußt, und wäre es ihm möglich gewesen, die besonderen Umstände zu begreifen, unter denen die Deutschen, die diese Beschreibung seines Lebens lesen, jetzt leben müssen, er hätte vermutlich eine Sonderausgabe für sie verfaßt. Er hätte darin Belehrungen eingefügt, einige jener Lektionen, die er bei jeder Gelegenheit so gern erteilte. Nur zu bereit, zuzugeben, daß in seinem eigenen Leben gewisse ernste errata vorgekommen waren, gab er sich in der Folge große Mühe, wieder gut zumachen. Mit dieser moralischen Geradheit, die manche Europäer irrtümlicherweise für amerikanische Heuchelei halten, hätte er auf enata im jüngsten deutschen Verhalten hingewiesen.
