In two sections, the first being instructional work on Figure Drawing a…nd Portraiture which is illustrated with 46 plates which are fully referenced in the text; the second section is the Gallery which is entirely composed of 36 tipped-in plates with no accompanying text. The illustrations are all the author's own drawings brought together from a period of many years. pp. xv, 179 plus 4 page publisher's book catalogue at rear. Tan cloth boards with gilt lettering to front and spine with protective paper cover made presumably from portions of the original dustwrapper glued down, with some stains and minor tears. The book is in near fine condition, with all plates present as called for. Presentation copy from the author to "The Art Workers Guild", dated January 1936. No other marks or blemishes except for a few minor spots to the front endpaper. An exellent copy. Size: 4to. A heavy book which may require additional postage if sent abroad. He tells me that he has sent a letter with his resignation to the President + Council of the S. G. A. He complains of the rejection of one of his works at the first exhibitio…n of the Society. I have spoken to him about the matter and tried to point out that the selecting committee by rejecting work, which they in a majority, do not consider up to their standard, are only doing their duty in trying to raise the quality of the show. Austen Brown however is of a different opinion + does not think their [!] should be any selecting committee, but that every member is entitled to have his four or six works placed, and perhaps he shows some logic in his argument. However, we do not want to lose him as a member, for he is a strong and well known artist. Perhaps this matter will come up tomorrow at the Council meeting [.]".
