Franklin konnte nicht wissen, daß seine Selbstbiographie im Jahre 1946 für ein Volk veröffentlicht werden würde, von dessen Vorfahren er manche als fähige und verläßliche Siedler in seinem geliebten Pennsylvanien kannte. Hätte er es gewußt, und wäre es ihm möglich gewesen, die besonderen Umstände zu begreifen, unter denen die Deutschen, die diese Beschreibung seines Lebens lesen, jetzt leben müssen, er hätte vermutlich eine Sonderausgabe für sie verfaßt. Er hätte darin Belehrungen eingefügt, einige jener Lektionen, die er bei jeder Gelegenheit so gern erteilte. Nur zu bereit, zuzugeben, daß in seinem eigenen Leben gewisse ernste errata vorgekommen waren, gab er sich in der Folge große Mühe, wieder gut zumachen.
