Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good to Very Good. Reprint (second edition). 1944. Reprint (second edition). 191pp., a colour frontispiece and 4 full-page black and white illustrations by Terence Cuneo. First published in 1942, this 'Biggles' is set in the late 1930s and Biggles learns the law of the jungle. With the after-images of the Roaring Twenties fading and the world heading once more towards conflict, Biggles, Algy and Ginger head for tropical climes, and the trio layover in Belize. While there, Biggles looks up his old pal Carruthers, Acting Governor of the territory, who is having problems. Someone - rumours abound about a self-styled 'King of the Forest' - is interrupting the flow of the nation's chief export, chicle, which is used to make chewing gum. In addition, three Americans have gone missing in the jungle, reportedly looking for treasure. Belize has no air force, and so Biggles volunteers to take his amphibious aircraft, Wanderer, upriver to investigate. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with black titling on the spine and a black illustration on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with a light dent across the bottom corner of the front board and a small water stain on the tip of the bottom front corner. There are some light dents on the bottom edge of the boards and a small light dent on the top edge of the front board. The spine ends are bumped and the bottom 1 1/4" of the spine is faded. The rest of the spine is very slightly faded in spite of the dustjacket being present. The contents are tight and clean with a few foxing marks on the fore edge of the text block. There is no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper has a price of 5/- Net and is also illustrated by Cuneo. This second edition dust jacket from 1944 appears identical to the first but is too big for the thinner book, and the picture on the spine is too wide for the actual spine of the book and curves onto the back. The size of the inner front flap is also larger. The list of other Biggles books on the back of the wrapper includes 'Sinister Service' which was removed from later printings as it was not a Biggles book. The wrapper has shelf wear with some soiling and the spine is slightly faded. Small pieces are missing from the corner tips and top of the spine and up to about 1 1/2" is missing from the bottom of the spine that extends to a lesser degree into the bottom front edge. A further piece measuring about 3/4" x 1" is missing from near the corner of the bottom fore edge. There is a small hole on the rear spine edge. The corners, edges and spine ends have some small tears of about 1/2" and most of the tears have been repaired on the reverse with document repair tape (not sellotape). There are also some creases on the bottom edges, the bottom corner of the front flap, and a light crease running down the back. Terence Cuneo (illustrator).…
