From the collection of illustrated juvenile fiction (1890- 1930) of Brian Mills (ÕThe DreamerÕ) (1939- 2011). He left no signs of his ownership but they are distinguished by their excellent bright condition in a genre that often shows up rather wornÉhe was known to constantly upgrade his collection. Reissue (first edition, published in 1896 had colour illustrations.) Clean, very good.

Publisher's black cloth with red lettering and mounted illustration. Rebacked with original boards and backstrip retained. Boards a bit rubbed along edges and corners, with a few scratches and scuffs to surface. Slight concave curve to front board. Endpapers toning, with very sparse foxing throughout and a few dog-eared pages. Binding is sound and pages unmarked. Published the same year as Bram Stoker's Dracula, which The Beetle outsold. Bleiler notes a rumor that there was a wager between the two authors to finish their novels by a given time, but is quick to add that he found no evidence to support the claim.
