Publisher's handsome brown full calf in a Solander Box (some splitting and bumping), limited to 500 numbered copies. An outstanding facsimile of the… first separately published Australian bird book. This edition also has a scholarly introduction by the late Allen McEvey, former curator of birds at the Museum of Victoria and a world renowned authority on the art of John Gould. The Lewin facsimile is arguably the finest production of Queensbury Hill Press and an excellent example of quality Australian binding. First published in London in 1808 as Birds of New Holland. Then the famous Sydney edition of 1813, by now titled Birds of New South Wales. After Lewin's death in 1819 his widow went back to England and produced the 1822 edition. John Gould recognised the promise of the book and published an edition in 1838, the colouring was gouache instead of watercolour in the 1822 edition. In 1875 the London bookseller Bernard Quaritch concocted an edition dated 1822, with the plates in gouache (not watercolour) and watermarked 1875. The modern Queensbury Hill Press version was taken from Donald Shank's copy of the 1838 edition. Allan McEvey (pers com) quite rightly considered this final iteration on Lewin as an edition in it's own right. Thus it could reasonably be called the sixth edition of Lewin's Birds of New South Wales.

The naturalist and natural history artist John William Lewin arrived in New South Wales in 1800. Under the patronage of Governor King he was able to sketch and collect specimens in uncharted and exotic locations. He was allowed to join expeditions to the Hunter and to Bass Strait, as well as to make a voyage to Tahiti. His first collection of copperplate engravings, The Natural History of Lepidopterous Insects of New South Wales, was published by his brother, Thomas in London in 1805. Lewin probably completed the copperplates for his Birds of New South Wales some time in 1805, and The Birds of New Holland, with their Natural History was published, again by Thomas Lewin, in London in 1808. Only six copies of this work are known to be extant, all of those, including the copy given to George III, having been distributed in London; for reasons unknown - possibly fire or loss at sea - the shipment of several dozen copies destined for colonial subscribers never arrived in Sydney. In the wake of this disappointment, Lewin decided to compile a colonial version of The Birds of New Holland. Without access to the original plates, which were in London, and deciding to undertake the authorship of the text to accompany the plates, Lewin was compelled to commence the venture completely anew. Making use of various earlier state plates, the colonial edition, printed and bound by George Howe, eventually appeared in 1813. The Birds of New South Wales with their Natural History is recognised as the first illustrated book published in Australia, and contains some of the first engravings printed in New South Wales (Wantrup, p. 367, who refers to the eight known complete copies of this phenomenal rarity, describing the first edition as "virtually unprocurable"). A third edition of A natural history of the birds of New South Waleswas published in 1822, with some of the plates printed on paper watermarked "1825". The present finely coloured volume is the fourth edition of 1838, revised by Gould, Vigors and Horsfield, presenting the birds highlighted with striking and bold gouache in contrast to the duller watercolour of the 1822 edition. In 1875 Quaritch published a fifth edition. All editions of Lewin's Birds are rare and desirable, with the 1822 and 1838 editions being the earliest realistically obtainable, both fine Australian colour-plate books butquite different in their presentation of the birds. Bradley Martin collection, valued at over USD $30 million, was assembled by steel industry heir H. Bradley Martin in the mid twentieth century and sold over 9 sales between 1989 - 1990. The collection included the 1813, 1822, and 1838 editions of Lewin's Birds. The 1813 edition was purchased by businessman John Elliott for USD $360,000 at the auction in 1989. It was resold through Christie's in 1996 to Hordern House, who sold it to the National Gallery of Australia. The 1822 edition was purchased by a private collector, and sold via Douglas Stewart Fine Books in 2015 to the National Gallery of Victoria. The 1838 edition is here presented for sale. The Reed Warbler is an interesting bird, found down Eastern Australia to Victoria and Tasmania, but coming and going mysteriously in the southern parts of its habitat. Besides being a migrant, the Reed Warbler, as its name indicates, is a merry and cheerful songster, not only by day…but by night, its song being quite canary-like. The bird's habitat is the sedgy sides of rivers and reeds and rushes of swamps. John Lewin was Australia's first professional artist, he arrived in the colony in 1800 and established himself as the first natural history artist. He is best remembered through the superb paintings and books he published on Australian ornithology and entomology. As the catalogue of the Wettenhall Library pointed out, "The bibliographical and historical importance of Lewin has been emphasised in recent years, but Lewin the naturalist has been somewhat neglected. Although his illustrations are in the style of the eighteenth century and predate the draughtsmanship, finesse and varied palette developed by the great nineteenth-century illustrators such as Lear, Wolf and Keulemans, they are highly competent and show the mind of an excellent observer. Lewin's birds are correct; the feather detail, legs, particularly the positioning of the toes, posture of the bird, the understanding of male and female plumage, the interactions between male and female (in four plates the male is singing and displaying to the female) are accurate and show a keen observer at work. The other important detail in Lewin's illustrations are the plants: they demonstrate an observer who is familiar with his subject's habitat and life-history." After Lewin's death in 1819, his widow Anna returned to England, where she set about producing a new edition of her husband's beautiful book, adding an extra eight plates for the new edition, this being plate XVIII from Lewin's A Natural History of the Birds of New South Wales published in 1822. .
