Substantial archive of material relating to the 1971 film, including 125 original photographs, two SIGNED by actress Georgina Hale, eight original color slides, 18 French front-of-house cards, a press kit, a program, a promotional book, and two magazines with articles about the film. The 125 photographs in the archive include 63 studio still photographs, 61 reference photographs (two in color), and one wardrobe test photograph, including two photographs, one black and white and one color, signed by actress Georgina Hale. Eight of the photographs are on-the-set photographs featuring director Ken Russell and stars Vanessa Redgrave and Oliver Reed. 16 of the studio still photographs are borderless with caption margins along the bottom, and eight of the reference photographs are borderless, one with cropping annotations on the verso and one with a German mimeo snipe on the verso. One on-the-set reference photograph struck circa 1980, one with yellow wax pencil cropping annotations on the recto, and six with ink annotations of collation numbers in the bottom margins. The July 9, 1971 issue of "The Daily Telegraph Magazine" featuring a cover article "Ken Russell: The Return of the Old-Style Movie Director." The April 1978 issue of the Spanish film magazine "Dirigido Por." featuring a cover article on the film. Based on the 1960 play by John Whiting, and on Aldous Huxley's 1952 book "The Devils of Loudun." A dramatization of the fall of Urbain Grandier, a Catholic priest accused of witchcraft and demonic conspiracy by a group of hysterical nuns. Often regarded as one of the more controversial films of the twentieth century, due in large part to its heavily violent and sexual content in a religious context, widely censored before its release.
