Nonetheless an excellent reference/working copy of this historically important text providing position statements by leading psychological theorists; notable that psychoanalysis is not included and McDougall's 'Hormic' psychology is grouped with Morton Prince under heading 'Purposive Groups' (McD.'s 2 chaps are called 'Men or Robots' (I, II) (the word robot having been coined only 5 years previously by Czech playwright Capek this was quite trendy of him.) Bound in half morocco with marbled paper covered boards. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece portrait of William Warburton. This a scarce Victorian biograpy of Anglican theologian William Warburton, Bishop of Gloucester. Warburtonwas known quarrelling publicly with figures like Voltaire, Rousseau, and fellow churchmen, but took a shining to Alexander Pope. In 17389, he published a series of pieces in The Works of the Learned , defending Pope against accusations of religious unorthodoxy, which led to an unlikely friendship between bishop and poet. Warburton's biographer, Rev. John Selby Watson, is an equally controversial figure; convicted for murdering his wife in 1872. A translator of Ancient Greek texts, Headmaster of Stockwell Grammar School and Reverend, Selby Watson had led a previously blameless life. Bound in half morocco with marbled paper boards.
